The Fire Department schedules 14-week training academies for recruits as needed. For details, see the firefighter listing on the Job Opportunities page.
Applications for employment as a firefighter are accepted only during open recruitment periods. The Human Resources department maintains an updated list of job openings. If you wish to be considered for this position with the Town of Cary, please fill out an electronic job interest card online and you will receive an email notifying you when firefighter recruitment begins. You may apply online at that time.
You may contact the Human Resources Department at (919) 469-4070 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. The Human Resources Department is located at Cary Town Hall, 316 N. Academy St.
The hiring process consists of a 14-week Orientation Academy. The department will conduct an Orientation Academy based on departmental need.
- High School graduate or equivalent
- At least 18 years of age (at time of application)
- Not color blind
- Valid driver's license with good driving record ("active" status)
Experience in public safety preferred. Persons highly motivated to work in the firefighting field are a plus!
The Orientation Academy last for approximately 14 weeks and is for candidates who already possess the following certifications:
- North Carolina Firefighter Level I & II
- North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician
Please note, if you are currently pursuing one of the above certifications through a NC Community College or an accredited agency, you must be FULLY CERTIFIED by the deadline on the job posting.
If you have a firefighter or EMT certification from a state other than North Carolina or the military, you must be granted reciprocity in order to be considered. Any questions about firefighter or technical rescuer certification reciprocity should be directed to the NC Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Any questions about EMT certification reciprocity should be directed to the Office of Emergency Medical Services (919-855-3935) within the NC Division of Health Service Regulation.
NOTE: Any certifications from out of state and/or the Department of Defense MUST have either an IFSAC or Pro Board seal on it. Also, your EMT must be a National Registry EMT. In any event, you must submit a Firefighter I, Firefighter II and EMT certification.
Physical Agility Test
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to take and pass a physical agility test (P.A.T.) An optional practice P.A.T. will be scheduled for interested persons. You must have medical clearance by a doctor to participate in both the practice and actual P.A.T. If eligible to continue in the process and participate in the optional practice P.A.T. or actual test, you will be emailed the required medical release forms along with the location.
If eligible to take the P.A.T. you will also be required to bring a certified copy of your motor vehicle driving record for the past five years to the P.A.T. It is strongly recommended that you begin to obtain your DMV record early because this process can sometimes be lengthy (Note: There is a charge from the DMV for this service).
Drug Test /Background Check
A drug test and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) will be required prior to employment.
