Project Updates - November 2018

  • During the month of September the contractor drove steel h-piles into the soil to support the bridge.
  • Early October the contractor erected wood formwork for concrete abutments.
  • Mid-October the contractor finished reinforcing steel installation and poured concrete for the abutments that will support the pedestrian bridge.
  • Early November the contractor stripped the formwork for the concrete pedestrian bridge abutments.
  • The prefabricated steel pedestrian bridge is scheduled to be set the weekend of November 17 and 18, weather permitting.  The bridge will match the existing pedestrian bridge on the opposite side of Cary Parkway.  This work will require a traffic shift on Cary Parkway over the weekend period to minimize delays to citizens and to create a safe working environment for the workers.

In the event of inclement weather, the contractor will resume the bridge work and traffic control the weekend of December 1 and 2 following the Thanksgiving holiday.

Project Background

The Town of Cary is constructing a new pedestrian bridge and sidewalk along the southbound side of SW Cary Parkway, just south of High House Road. This addition will mirror the existing sidewalk and pedestrian bridge along the opposite side of the street. The bridge will cross Crabtree Creek and a future section of the Crabtree Creek Greenway. This project is expected to be complete summer 2019.

At the July 9, 2015 Town Council Meeting, Council approved the FY15 Sidewalk Improvements Project including installation of the pedestrian bridge and sidewalk on Cary Parkway. This missing link of sidewalk was the highest-ranking project on the annual list based on factors including safety, connectivity to existing sidewalks and connectivity of residential areas to commercial centers.

Design utility relocation and construction costs totaling $570,200 are funded for this project.
