Capital Sidewalk Projects

The following sidewalk projects have received funding for design, right-of-way and construction.

 


Byrum Street

Project Limits:  From Walnut Street to 350 feet east of Kildaire Farm Road

Description:  This project will complete the sidewalk on the south side of Byrum Street in Downtown Cary.  The road is a mix of single-family, multi-family, a local business, and the Heartwood Montessori School.  There’s a short portion of existing sidewalk between Kildaire Farm Road to Heartwood Preschool. The sidewalk project is within close proximity to Cary Elementary School, Heartwood Montessori School and the Cary Downtown Park.   

Schedule: Construction is forecasted to begin in Spring/Summer 2020.

Byrum Street Map

Collins Road

Project Limits: 105 feet in front of Davis Drive Elementary School

Description:  This project is directly in front of Davis Drive Elementary School is a 125-foot gap in the sidewalk network.  This area has a clear, well-worn path where the grass has deteriorated from frequent pedestrian use.  The link provides a sidewalk between the school’s driveway and the Davis Drive street-side trail. 

Schedule: Construction was completed July 2019.

E Chatham Street

Project Limits: From E Durham Road to Reedy Creek Road

E CHATHAM

Description:  This sidewalk segment completes this sidewalk along the north side of East Chatham Street connecting downtown to the new Fire Station #2 and other commercial centers.  There is also a GoCary Transit stop along this section of roadway.

Ederlee Drive

Project Limits: From Penny Road to Regency Parkway/Richelieu Drive

EDERLEE

Description: This project provides a sidewalk adjacent to the Penny Road Elementary School for children walking to school. The sidewalk will continue further north and connects to residential neighborhoods, Koka Booth, and the Symphony Lake and Swift Creek Greenways. The proposed pedestrian crosswalk on Ederlee Drive at Whitcomb Lane that was initially considered to be included in the project has now been removed.

Edinburgh South Drive

Project Limits: West of Gregson Drive to MacGregor Village Shopping Center

EDINBURGH SOUTH

Description: This sidewalk segment expands our pedestrian network in MacGregor Office Park to connect the MacGregor Village Shopping Center to nearby office and commercial centers while updating an existing pedestrian crossing.

Schedule: Sidewalk completed. We are awaiting street marking.

N Harrison Avenue

Project Limits: Kingswood Drive to W Johnson Street

Description:  This sidewalk project connects two neighborhoods on the east side of N Harrison Avenue. Kingswood Elementary School is located on Johnson Street. The sidewalk will improve pedestrian access for families walking to the school.

Schedule: Sidewalk to be completed during the week of June 24, 2019

Louis Stephens Drive

Project Limits:  High House Road to Cary Tennis Park 

LOUIS STEPHENS

Description: This project will fill in the missing link between the Green Hope Elementary School/Park and the Cary Tennis Park to the north and local shopping and businesses along High House Rd to the south, while serving multiple neighborhoods sandwiched in the middle.  Three roads included in the design are Louis Stephens Rd, Carpenter Upchurch Rd, and Upchurch Meadow Rd.  The design includes the half-widening of Louis Stephens Road adding curb and gutter, a 5-ft sidewalk on the east side of the road and bike lanes. 

Schedule: Construction is anticipated to begin as soon as Spring/Summer 2020.

LOUIS STEPHENS MAP

NW Maynard Road

Project Limits: From Old Apex Road to the existing sidewalk west of Castalia Drive

NW MAYNARD

Description: This project fills an existing sidewalk gap in conjunction with the Town’s NW Maynard Rd waterline project. Both projects will be coordinated to time construction together to minimize disruption to residents and save costs.

Old Apex Road East of Laura Duncan Road

Project Limits: East of Laura Duncan Road to west of SW Cary Parkway

OLD APEX RD EAST OF LAURA DUNCAN

Description: This sidewalk segment will complete a missing sidewalk link adjacent to the recently completed Laurel Crossing development and provide connectivity to Laurel Park Elementary School. This site is currently a section of roadway without curb and gutter. Lane widening and the addition of curb and gutter and storm drainage is included with this sidewalk project.

Schedule: Construction to start at the end of June 2019.

OLD APEX RD EAST OF LAURA DUNCAN MAP

 

Old Apex Road from SW Maynard Road

Project Limits:  From SW Maynard Road to the existing sidewalk in front of the Town Station Apartments 

OLD APEX RD SW MAYNARD

Description:  This sidewalk project will be coordinated with the Old Apex Water Line Reinforcement project (WT1172) to maximize Town resources and minimize impacts on residents.  This project completes the sidewalk on the east side of Old Apex Rd south of SW Maynard Rd.  A well-worn goat path is seen on the side of the road due to all the pedestrians in the area.      

Schedule: Construction is anticipated to begin Spring/Summer 2020.

OLD APEX RD SW MAYNARD MAP

S Walker Street

Project Limits: E. Chatham Street to Waldo Street

S WALKER ST

Description:  This project includes brick sidewalk and traffic signal upgrade that extends our downtown beautification effort.  Working collaborative, we are upsizing from 6” to 16” water main, installing structural lining to improve reliability and resiliency of existing sewer lines, and installing new 36” storm water drainage pipes to help reduce flooding in the Cedar Street

Schedule: Construction is anticipated to begin mid-July 2019

S WALKER ST MAP

Tryon Road

Project Limits:  Tryon Rd to W. Ashville Ave to E. Ashville Ave

TRYON RD

Description: This segment will complete the sidewalk network on the north side of Tryon Rd serving pedestrians who walk to WakeMed Cary, local restaurants, retail and hotels. There is right of way available on the north side of Tryon Rd. There will also be signal improvements at the Tryon Rd/Crescent Green intersection including pedestrian signal heads and a crosswalk on the east leg, increasing pedestrian safety.
