Capital Sidewalk Projects

The following sidewalk projects have received funding for design, right-of-way, and construction.

Byrum Street

Project Limits:  From Walnut Street to 350 feet east of Kildaire Farm Road

Description:  This project will complete the sidewalk on the south side of Byrum Street in Downtown Cary.  The road is a mix of single-family, multi-family, a local business, and the Heartwood Montessori School.  There’s a short portion of existing sidewalk between Kildaire Farm Road to Heartwood Preschool. The sidewalk project is within close proximity to Cary Elementary School, Heartwood Montessori School and the Cary Downtown Park.   

Schedule: Construction is forecasted to begin in Spring/Summer 2021.

Byrum Street Map

Ederlee Drive South of Regency Pkwy

Project Limits: From Penny Road to Regency Pkwy/Richelieu D

EDERLEE

Description: This project provides a sidewalk adjacent to the Penny Road Elementary School for children walking to school. The sidewalk will continue further north and connects to residential neighborhoods, Koka Booth, and the Symphony Lake and Swift Creek Greenways. The proposed pedestrian crosswalk on Ederlee Drive at Whitcomb Lane that was initially considered to be included in the project has now been removed.

Louis Stephens Drive

Project Limits:  High House Road to Cary Tennis Park 

LOUIS STEPHENS

Description: This project will fill in the missing link between the Green Hope Elementary School/Park and the Cary Tennis Park to the north and local shopping and businesses along High House Rd to the south, while serving multiple neighborhoods sandwiched in the middle.  Three roads included in the design are Louis Stephens Rd, Carpenter Upchurch Rd, and Upchurch Meadow Rd.  The design includes the half-widening of Louis Stephens Road adding curb and gutter, a 5-ft sidewalk on the east side of the road and bike lanes. 

Schedule: Construction is anticipated to begin as soon as Spring/Summer 2021.

NW Maynard Road

Project Limits: From Old Apex Road to the existing sidewalk west of Castalia Drive

NW MAYNARD

Description: This project fills an existing sidewalk gap in conjunction with the Town’s NW Maynard Rd waterline project. Both projects will be coordinated to time construction together to minimize disruption to residents and save costs.

Old Apex Road from SW Maynard Road

Project Limits:  From SW Maynard Road to the existing sidewalk in front of the Town Station Apartments 

OLD APEX RD SW MAYNARD

Description:  This sidewalk project will be coordinated with the Old Apex Water Line Reinforcement project (WT1172) to maximize Town resources and minimize impacts on residents.  This project completes the sidewalk on the east side of Old Apex Rd south of SW Maynard Rd.  A well-worn goat path is seen on the side of the road due to all the pedestrians in the area.      

Schedule: Construction is anticipated to begin Spring/Summer 2020.

OLD APEX RD SW MAYNARD MAP

Tryon Road

Project Limits:  Tryon Rd to W. Ashville Ave to E. Ashville Ave

TRYON RD

Description: This segment will complete the sidewalk network on the north side of Tryon Rd serving pedestrians who walk to WakeMed Cary, local restaurants, retail and hotels. There is right of way available on the north side of Tryon Rd. There will also be signal improvements at the Tryon Rd/Crescent Green intersection including pedestrian signal heads and a crosswalk on the east leg, increasing pedestrian safety.

Maynard Road

Project Limits:  Between Walgreens Parking Lot and Circle K

Maynard SW 02

Description: Maynard Rd has proximity to shopping areas, greenway, transit, and a park.  This project will fill in a missing link in the existing Sidewalk to provide a wheelchair ramp to meet ADA requirements and provide safety for pedestrian.

Roberts Road

Project Limits:  Sidewalk gap east of Green Level High School

Roberts Rd 03

Description: This Sidewalk project is part of the FY20 sidewalk projects and was requested by Wake County Public Schools. It will close the gap in the existing sidewalk from the Green Level High School to the Manors at Green Level Crossing neighborhood and help provide safety for students walking to and from school.

Nottingham Drive

Project Limits:  From Buck Jones Rd to Donaldson Dr

Nottingham 03

Description: This is funded as part of the CAMPO program to prioritize transportation in the area. It will provide safety for pedestrian and help increase use of public transportation.

S Walker Street from FUMC to E Park

Project Limits:  From First United Methodist Church Parking Lot to E Park St

Description: Sidewalk along the west side of Walker Street will connect pedestrian from E Park St. to recently completed sidewalk from Waldo St. to E Chatham St. and provide opportunities to walk around downtown Cary.

Project Limits:  From N Harrison Ave to Academy Street

Description: This is also part of the CAMPO program. It will help increase utilizing our transit system and provide safety for students walking to Kingswood Elementary School.

Description: The Sidewalk project from Gregory Dr. to Chapel Hill Rd. will improve connectivity to Kingswood Elementary and Downtown.

Summerwinds Drive

Project Limits:  From Tryon Rd to Summerview Lane

Description: Sidewalk in this neighborhood will provide residents the opportunity to walk safely to nearby Waverly shopping center.

E Johnson Street

Project Limits:  From Kingswood Elementary School to Chapel Hill Road

Description: This project, along with the W Johnson sidewalk project completes the sidewalk on Johnson St from N Harrison Ave. to Chapel Hill Rd. and will provide walking opportunities for residents and opportunities to use the transit system.

Project Limits:  From Bexley Bluff Ln to Weston Pkwy

Description: The Norwell sidewalk project is also part of the CAMPO projects and will help increase utilizing our transit system and provide safety for pedestrian.

Holly Springs Rd

Project Limits:  Gaps in sidewalk on both sides of the road south of Jones Franklin Rd

Description: There are gaps in the Sidewalk on both sides of this road, and the project will close the gap on both sides and expand opportunities for walking and improve safety for pedestrian in this shopping area.

Project Limits: From Regency Pkwy / Richelieu Dr to Avenue of the Estates
