Introduction

Cary is evaluating the current and future needs for new and upgraded indoor recreation facilities throughout the community.

Western Cary

Separate from those projects included in the 2019 Shaping Cary’s Tomorrow Bonds, Cary has identified the need for a new community recreational facility in western Cary and is examining how that offering might be paired with other facility needs in the area.

Initial funding for a portion of the Western Cary Facilities Project was approved as a part of the Fiscal Year 2021 Budget.

Central Cary

Cary Towne Center (renamed to Carolina Yards) is in the process of being redeveloped which will include shops, apartments, offices, and restaurants.

A Cary Community Recreation and Sports Center is proposed as a part of that redevelopment.

The project will take up five of the total 87 acres of the mall site.

This facility could be used to supplement and/or replace the aging and outdated Herb Young Community Center.
