CARY, NC – A Raleigh man with ties to Cary has been charged with the shooting deaths of Selvaraju Vellingiri of Cary and Bobby Earl Lucas of Raleigh. This evening, representatives from the Cary and Raleigh police departments served arrest warrants for Nicholas Dalton Nanes, 29, who is currently in the Wake County Public Safety Center. He faces one count of murder for Vellingiri’s death and one count of murder for the death of Lucas. Murder is a Class A felony in North Carolina punishable by death or life imprisonment without parole.

The Cary Police Department and Raleigh Police Department worked in conjunction with the City-County Bureau of Investigation and Wake County District Attorney’s Office to share information and bring resolution in these cases.

“While we recognize that this arrest will not ease the pain and loss these families are experiencing, we hope that they and the communities will be able to rest a bit easier,” said Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown. “Diligent, thorough investigation and follow-up by detectives with both agencies have led to this moment. It was a united effort.”

“Amidst the tragedy felt by the family and the entire Cary community, we are glad to offer some resolution in this case. The investigation is still active and demonstrates the importance of collaboration and regional cooperation across city lines,” said Cary Police Chief Toni Dezomits. “We appreciate the continued support of the Cary Town Council and the citizens we serve.”

On Thursday, August 27, 2020, Cary Police responded to a report of shots fired in the Somerset community in western Cary. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Vellingiri, 55, in the vicinity of the community pool in the 100-block of Connemara Drive. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

On Friday, August 7, 2020, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Raleigh Police Department officers responded to a call concerning a shooting in the 4100 block of Bland Road. Upon arrival, they discovered Bobby Earl Lucas, 56, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

*Media note - Now that an arrest has been made, the focus turns to Nanes’ prosecution, which is led by the Wake County District Attorney’s Office. As such, this is the last case update the Town of Cary and City of Raleigh plan to make on this outside of court until the matter is completely resolved.
