Cary, NC – For the tenth consecutive year, Cary will observe America Recycles Day by offering citizens the chance to dispose of sensitive documents safely and securely through its free shred event.

The 2019 event will be held November 16 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Garmon Operations Center, 400 James Jackson Ave. The Town has contracted with Shred-It to have four shredding trucks in operation that day. The event will take place “sprinkle or shine,” and may end early if the trucks reach capacity.

“The Town is happy to offer this free service again this year,” said Bob Holden, Cary’s Solid Waste Division Manager, “especially since our recycling program no longer accepts shredded paper.  This event continues to provide citizens an opportunity to shred and recycle their sensitive documents, while helping us divert this material away from the landfill.”

In 2018 alone, the shred event processed more than 24 tons of paper from 1020 participants in four hours.

Participants at this year’s event may shred up to three boxes of paper at no charge, and must be in line by 1 p.m. to drive through the designated traffic pattern. Town staff and volunteers will be on-site to help manage traffic and unload boxes from citizen’s vehicles for the shred queue.

Communities across the country have come together each November since 1997 to celebrate America Recycles Day, the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States. Since the Town’s first shred event in 2010, more than 6,900 Cary citizens have participated in Cary’s paper shred, keeping more than 287,000 pounds of paper out of the landfill.
