Cary Police Charge Driver in Pedestrian Fatality Case
CARY, NC – Cary Police have arrested the driver of the car that struck and killed Sandra Verastegui, 52, on September 30 in Cary. Jax Fuller, 16, from Cary has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving and failure to maintain lane control. Misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, a Class 1 misdemeanor, carries a maximum penalty of 150 days in prison. He is currently being held at the Wake County Public Safety Center.
At 9 a.m. on September 30, Cary emergency responders were dispatched to the 1000 block of Castalia Drive in reference to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. A blue 2012 Ford Escape driven by Fuller was traveling east on Castalia Drive when it struck Verastegui. Investigators believe she was taking out the trash in front of her home at the time of the incident. Fuller and a 16-year-old passenger remained on the scene.
**Media Note – Now that an arrest has been made, the focus turns to the prosecution, which for Cary is led by the Wake County District Attorney’s Office. Therefore, this is the last update and official comment the Town of Cary plans to make on this case outside of court until the matter is completely resolved.
