Cary, NC – Weather permitting, contractors working on behalf of the Town of Cary will begin constructing a new section of Carpenter Fire Station Road with a new bridge supporting the CSX railroad tracks on January 14. Cary will also realign Carpenter Fire Station Road from N.C. 55 to Morrisville Carpenter Road, west of Louis Stephens Drive, creating a four-lane, median-divided street to provide additional capacity and increased safety for drivers. The realigned street is envisioned to be one of the region’s key east-west connections, linking western Cary with N.C. 54 in Morrisville and furthering connectivity to I-40 and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The project is expected to be complete fall 2022.

Intermittently, throughout the project, one or more lanes of travel along N.C. 55 from McCrimmon Parkway to Morrisville Parkway, Carpenter Fire Station Road from N.C. 55 to Morrisville Carpenter Road; Saunders Grove Lane; Morrisville Carpenter Road from N.C. 55 to Louis Stephens Drive; and Good Hope Church Road between N.C. 55 and Morrisville Carpenter Road may be closed to facilitate the improvements. Citizens can anticipate daytime lane closures between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with Saturday work as needed.

Drivers traveling through the area should expect intermittent detours and follow the direction of signage and onsite flaggers. Project updates, including lane closure details, will be communicated throughout the project via the Town’s website, email service and Twitter feed.

“In partnership with CSX Transportation, the Town of Cary is committed to providing safe and efficient transportation that meets the needs of all who live in or travel through our community,” said Robert Shultes, Project Manager. “The realigned Carpenter Fire Station Road will serve as a key east-west connection across Cary to Morrisville, I-40 and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.”

Once the realigned section of the new roadway is open to traffic, the Town will permanently close the at-grade railroad crossing at Morrisville Carpenter Road to the south as part of an agreement with the N.C. Department of Transportation and CSX. The Town previously closed the Carpenter Fire Station Road at-grade railroad crossing summer 2018, per the agreement and to facilitate this project.

The cost for the Carpenter Fire Station Road Bridge and Intersection Improvements Project is approximately $36 million, including construction, right of way, design and permitting. Funding was approved by Cary voters as part of the 2012 Community Investment Bonds referendum.
