Vandalism Leads to Cary Sewer Overflow

Post Date:12/05/2018 6:16 PM

CARY, NC – Stones and wood dropped into a manhole led to an estimated 1,350 gallons of wastewater overflowing near the 500 block of Fumagalli Drive. The spill occurred around 10:30 a.m. on December 5, sending waste into an unnamed tributary of Panther Creek. No fish kill was observed. Crews cleared the blockage by 11:15 a.m.; cleanup will continue through tomorrow and will involve building a dam downstream and flushing the creek with dechlorinated water.

The Clean Water Act requires public notice in the form of a news release issued by public works operators within 24 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters. Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
