There’s No Fooling With Fit Cary Month
Cary Town Council Proclaims April Fit Cary Month
CARY, NC – The Town of Cary’s not fooling with health and wellness as it kicks off its Fit Cary Month on April 1 for the fifth consecutive year, the Cary Town Council supported the endeavor with an official proclamation, continuing the tradition of promoting healthy living. A variety of free or low-cost fitness and wellness opportunities are offered Town-wide throughout April and are open to all.
The month starts with a free Family Fitness Night on April 1 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Bond Park Community Center, 801 High House Rd.; all ages are welcome.
Other free activities throughout the month include:
- Drop-in fitness and wellness programs (select classes) the week of April 4, and
- Drop-in open gym for basketball, badminton, volleyball, pickleball and preschool throughout the week of April 11.
Weekly greenway walks on Saturday or Sunday at 1 p.m. are also scheduled:
April 2 at Davis Drive Park,
April 10 on the Mills Park Track,
April 24 at the Bond Park Boathouse, and
April 30 at North Cary Park.
“Cary has so much in terms of healthy living to offer our citizens and visitors. Fit Cary Month is a great way for us to encourage individuals to participate in fitness and wellness programs from April and beyond; in addition Fit Cary Month is an opportunity for all to try many of our programs with little to no financial investment,” explains Cindi King, Senior Operations & Programs supervisor. “The Town has included Healthy Snack and Lunch recommendations on the Fit Cary webpage as eating more nutritious foods can also lead to a healthier life."
In 2007, the Town of Cary received the Fit Community designation; in 2010, it was re-designated as the first Gold-level Fit Community in North Carolina. The Town is also designated a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists and a Bronze Level Walk Friendly Community by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center.
There are many opportunities to stay fit, not only in April but yearlong. Cary’s staffed recreation facilities offer hundreds of fitness and wellness programs for people of all ages and abilities. In addition, with its 30 parks; 109 miles of shared lanes, bike routes and bike lanes; 417 miles of sidewalks; and over 70 miles of paved greenways and multi-use paths, residents of and visitors to Cary are sure to find the right activity, and be and stay active year-round within the community. As of this spring, with the opening of the Carpenter Park Community Gardens, the Town now has two community gardens in its inventory, with the first one at the Senior Center.
