Amendments to School Speed Zone Schedules (PD08-019)
Consideration of an ordinance amendment adoption to the Town Code Sec. 34-334 (Schedule XIV: Designated School Speed Zones)

Pursuant to adoption of a comprehensive school zone flasher initiative in July 2007, significant coordination with North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) was undertaken to update all school speed zones in Cary and gain concurrent status for these speed limits.  All Town Ordinances pertaining to school speed zones on DOT streets within the Town limits had to be rewritten in acceptable language for DOT.

 

Some existing concurring ordinances need to be rescinded by NCDOT to reflect changes and delete outdated limits on certain streets, changed street names, changed school names and times.

 

It is requested that Council amend Chapter 34 of the Town Code to change the language of current school speed zones to adhere to DOT policy and facilitate acceptance of concurrent ordinance.

 

 

 

Ordinance Amendment

 

AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF CARY, PROVIDING THAT THE CODE OF ORDINANCES, TOWN OF CARY, BE AMENDED

BY REVISING SECTION 34-334 OF SAID CODE; PROVIDING FOR

 

Sec. 34-334.  Schedule XIV: Designated school speed zones.

In accordance with the provisions of section 34-151, the following streets are hereby designated as school speed zones:

Carpenter-Upchurch Road (SR 1617) 1.15 miles from High House Rd. (SR 1615) to a point 0.37 miles south from Morrisville Parkway in effect for Greenhope High School zone from 7:35 a.m. to 8:35 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on school days only--35 mph.

 

On SR 1617 (Carpenter-Upchurch Rd.) from a point 1.15 mile north of SR 1615 (High House Rd.) northward to a point 1.62 mile north of SR 1615.  (In effect from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after school begins and ends on school days only for Green Hope High School) –35mph.

 

Cary Towne Blvd. (SR 1497) eastward from Southeast Maynard Rd. (SR 1415) to a point 0.35 miles east of Southeast Maynard Rd. (SR 1415) in effect for Adams Elementary School zone from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on school days only--35 mph.

 

On SR 1497 (Cary Towne Blvd.) from SR 1415 (SE Maynard Rd.) eastward to a point 0.35 mile east of SR 1415. (In effect from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after school begins and ends on school days only for Adams Elementary)—35 mph.

 

Chapel Hill Road (SR 3081) from a point three-tenths mile east of N.W. Maynard Road (SR 1747) eastward to a point 0.55 mile east of N.W. Maynard Road (SR 1747), in effect for the Northwoods Elementary School zone from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. on school days only--25 mph.

Section 3.  This ordinance shall become effective on the 8th day of May, 2008.
