VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR

CARY RE-LEAF PROJECT

CARY -- As many as 70 adult volunteers are needed to participate in the Town of Cary’s Operation Fran Releaf. Cary’s project is part of a region-wide reforestation and educational effort being coordinated by the Triangle J Council of Governments to replace a portion of the trees lost to Hurricane Fran last year. Cary’s releafing is slated for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, but volunteers should register to participate by October 10th.

"We want to encourage civic groups and community organizations to offer a commitment of support for the project," said Ricky Barker, coordinator for Cary’s Releaf. Barker said that the Town would like to see at least five representatives from interested organizations operate as a planting group.

That Saturday, Cary’s Releaf volunteers will plant between 60-70 trees in "public spaces" at six locations: Bond Park, Heater Park, White Oak Greenway, Lake Pine Greenway, Dunham Park, and Fire Station #1. The workers will be honored with a reception at Bond Park at about 1:00 p.m. following their morning planting activities.

"‘I hope that Cary’s Releaf will help us all remember just how fortunate we really were a year ago," said Town Manager Bill Coleman. "We survived Hurricane Fran by working together, and I believe that this type of project helps us rekindle that community spirit."
