FLOYD HAMPERS CARY’S REGULAR YARD WASTE COLLECTION

CARY, NC – Extra crews and overtime hours are helping the Town of Cary cope with Hurricane Floyd debris collection, but the going is slow. Cary’s Public Works & Utilities crews are moving quickly to haul away the tons of limbs, leaves, and tree parts that fell due to Floyd, but it will take time to get the job done. The Town is asking citizens to continue bringing their debris to the curb with the understanding that it may be several weeks before yard waste pickup schedules are back to normal. Cary normally collects yard waste each Monday town-wide.

"We appreciate everyone’s cooperation during the clean-up," said Public Works Division Director Mike Bajorek. "We want folks to know that we’ve mobilized every available resource to return Cary to normal, and while it will take time, we will make it happen."

Those who cannot wait to have their debris collected as yard waste may take it to the Citizen Convenience Center (old public works facility) at 313 N. Dixon Avenue. Citizens can dump their vegetative debris anytime, any day at a special section of the facility. However, the Center is staffed as follows:

In addition to collecting Floyd debris through regular yard waste pickups, Cary officials have announced a one-time, town-wide sweep for Floyd debris that begins on Monday, September 27th. To insure collection, citizens need to have debris curbside by 7:00 AM that day. The debris should be placed within ten feet of the curb but not in the street. Since collection crews will be using heavy equipment, debris should not be placed by parked vehicles, under guy wires, next to fire hydrants, or close to mailboxes. The Town will collect all types and sizes of vegetative Floyd debris during the sweep including trees, limbs, leaves, and stumps. Stumps should be separated from the other debris and set aside in the same location.

For those who miss the town-wide sweep, don’t want to handle the debris as regular yard waste, or who don’t want to haul the debris themselves, there are two other options. (1) after the town-wide sweep, the Town will collect debris by appointment for a disposal cost of $250 per load; or (2) citizens may contract with a private hauler to remove the waste.
