LOCALS JOIN IN NATION CELEBRATION OF RECYCLING
CARY, NC The Town of Cary will host a multi-agency expo this weekend to celebrate and promote national America Recycles Day. Designed to help educate the public about what can and cannot be recycled at different locations in the area, the Fall Recycling Expo will be held on November 13th from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM in front of Cary Town Hall, 316 B. Academy Street. Citizens may move from table to table learning about area recycling drop off centers, recycling curbside service, and composting. Visitors will also be able to sign an "America Recycles Day" pledge card for a chance to win a house made of recycled materials.
"The Expo is part of the Towns continuing effort to protect the environment by increase citizen and business participation in recycling," said event coordinator Josephine Valencia.
Present or providing information at the event will be:
Between 70 percent and 80 percent of Cary residents participate in recycling. In the 1998 -1999 fiscal year (July 1-June 30), 6475.47 tons were picked up at the curb, up from 6298.83 tons the previous year.
Cary recycles more items than the surrounding cities. The only item that is not picked up at the curb in Cary but is picked up in other Triangle cities is junk mail. Curbside, Cary recycles: newspapers; glass food bottles and jars; plastic bottles #1, #2, #5, #7, including shampoo and detergent bottles; aluminum foil, aluminum pie pans and trays, aluminum soda cans; steel and tin food cans; glossy magazines and catalogs; milk and juice cartons and any other carton with a gable top like fabric softener refills, polycoated drink boxes like kids juice and soy milk; 6-pack rings; corrugated cardboard; and used motor oil (by appointment).
The Fall Recycling Expo is planned for the grassy area in front of Town Hall. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Atrium inside of Town Hall Building A.
