FALL INTO MUSIC WITH CARY ’S CONCERT SERIES

Two well-loved concert series bring a variety of musical talent to town

CARY , NC Make plans now to participate in one or both of Cary ’s long-running and well-loved concert series: the Fall Sertoma Series and Marvelous Music Series.  While the two are similar in that they offer access to an exceptional choice of music and entertainment sponsored by the Town of Cary , the two are differentiated by their locations and cost of admission.

“Our fall concerts are a wonderful opportunity for individuals of all ages to participate in high-quality and diverse cultural events.  Whether you prefer the more relaxed setting of our free, outdoor Fall Sertoma Series or the intimacy of our Marvelous Music Series, there’s something for everyone, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities,” said Town of Cary Performing Arts Coordinator Sarah Bunch .

In the first of four free concerts of the 2008-09 Fall Sertoma Series, on September 6 at 3 p.m. Great Big Gone showcases its primarily original compositions, which include a mix of styles from electrified porch picking and honky tonk, to blues, Western Swing and roots rock.  Great Big Gone is followed by “Brass at Bond” on Saturday September 13 at 3 p.m.  Celebrate the glorious sounds of trombones, tubas, trumpets and more. The Series will also spotlight one of the Town’s hallmarks – the Cary Town Band – on Friday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m.   Directed by Dr. James R. Hammerle, the Cary Town Band presents concerts of a bygone era, featuring marches, circus music, waltzes, one- and two-steps, rags, famous overtures and other music of the 1890s and early 1900s.

The fourth and final performance of the Series, a children’s one-act opera entitled Little Red’s Most Unusual Day, takes place on Saturday, October 4 at 3 p.m.   Presented by Opera Express, the operatic version of Little Red Riding Hood will captivate and entertain the audience as they watch Little Red, Dudley (the forest ranger) and Granny outfox the wolf, Mr. Big Bad.  These events will all be held at the Sertoma Amphitheatre inside Fred G. Bond Metro Park , 801 High House Road .

The ninth annual Marvelous Music Series opens on Saturday October 18, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. with the world's premier, all-male Hindi a cappella group, Penn Masala.  Following Penn Masala, the Fisk Jubilee Singers perform on Saturday, January 10, 2009 as part of the annual Cary MLK Dreamfest Celebration. The Fisk Jubilee Singers are vocal artists and students of Fisk University in Nashville , Tennessee who sing and travel worldwide.  On Friday, February 13, 2009 , Apex residents and award-winning artists David zum Brunnen and Serena Ebhardt present War Bonds: Songs and Letters from WWII, through which they fill the stage with wartime memories and tunes. The show immortalizes the memories of the “greatest generation” and honors the sacrifices they made.

The final show of the Series features folk music pioneer Rusty Evans and A Tribute to Johnny Cash on Friday, May 1, 2009 .  Evans will perform favorites such as Ring of Fire, Thoughts Have Wings, Chaos Lady, I Walk the Line, Sea of Heartbreak , Big River , Get Rhythm, Folsom Prison Blues and more.  Prior to the show, for an additional charge, a dinner will be hosted for seniors and season ticket holders.  The dinner is in keeping with the tradition begun two years ago in which the Senior Center and the Marvelous Music Series partnered to offer a richer experience for seniors and season ticket holders.

The Marvelous Music Series will be held at the Herbert C. Young Community Center, 101 Wilkinson Avenue in Cary .  Season tickets are currently being sold, and will be available through Saturday, January 10, 2009 .  At $52 (4-concert package) and $45 (3-concert package) per person, the season ticket represents substantial savings over individual tickets, offers up‑front seating at the performance and provides access to VIP receptions. Patrons interested in season tickets can download an order form, or request a form by calling (919) 462-3969.  New this year is the Friends & Family Four Pack through which four tickets can be purchased for $50; these tickets are good for all ages at one concert.  Individual tickets, which go on sale two months prior to each concert date, can be purchased at the Herb Young Community Center , Monday through Friday, noon-6pm or through Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.com or (919) 834-4000.  Purchased individually, tickets are $18 (adults) and $16 (seniors 55 and older).
