CARY FIRE ANNOUNCES ANNUAL TREE BURN FOR SAFETY

WHAT:           The Town of Cary Fire Department will demonstrate the importance of taking proper care of Christmas trees by setting several on fire for the media.

WHEN:          December 16, 2003 6 p.m.

WHERE:        Fire Station 1, 1501 N. Harrison Avenue , Cary

WHO:             Cary Fire Fighters

BACKGROUND:

Nearly one-third of all house fires occur between Thanksgiving and New Years Day mostly due to the special risks created by holiday decorations, particularly Christmas trees.  The Cary Fire Department encourages citizens to take precautions when decorating for the holidays.  If you choose to put up a natural tree, water the tree daily and dispose of it soon after Christmas to prevent fires associated with dried trees.

The Town of Cary begins curbside collection of Christmas trees on January 12, 2004 .  To ensure collection, trees must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on January 12th.  Drop off locations are open December 15, 2003 – January 16, 2004 in designated areas, including the Cary Citizen Convenience Center, 313 N. Dixon Ave.; Green Hope Elementary School , 1303 Upchurch Meadow Road and Oak Grove Elementary School .
