CARY POLICE GET TOUGHER ON TRAFFIC OFFENSES

CARY, NC – Traffic safety will be an even higher priority as Cary Police today launch strict enforcement of the letter of the law—or in this case, the number of the law—when it comes to motor vehicle speeds, especially but not only in school zones during school hours.

By order of the Chief of Police, all Town of Cary Police Department uniformed officers assigned to patrol and traffic duties are immediately beginning using all available time to monitor traffic and strictly enforce traffic laws in their respective areas.

“This crackdown is in response to increasing community outcry for more and stricter enforcement of our motor vehicle traffic laws,” said Cary Police Chief WJ Hunter.  “While some of the feedback we’re getting is likely due to some recent higher profile cases, it’s true that Cary has had many more fatalities and injuries from traffic incidents in the past than we’ve ever had from criminal activities.”

In fact, in the past decade Cary has recorded nearly four times the number of traffic fatalities than criminal homicides, and property losses from traffic crashes far exceed those from all criminal incidents combined.

“The message for those driving in Cary is that the number on the speed limit sign is the speed limit maximum in Cary—not  five or eight or ten miles over.  The limit is the limit, period,” said Hunter.
