DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR SECOND ANNUAL AMERICA RECYCLES DAY SCULPTURE CONTEST

 

CARY, NC – Friday, November 14 is the deadline for 2nd - 8th grade Cary students and others attending Cary schools to enter the Town of Cary’s second annual America Recycles Day Recyclable Sculpture Contest.  Sculptures must be made totally from items that can be recycled in the Cary curbside recycling program, can weigh no more than 10 pounds, and can be no taller nor wider than 24 inches.  All entries are due by 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Cary Towne Center .  A reception and awards ceremony will be taking place at the Cary Towne Center on November 15, 2003 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

 

“The project gives children a chance to exercise their creativity in developing an educational sculpture that reinforces the value of recyclable materials,” said Town of Cary Recycling Specialist Karen Hales .

 

Eligible sculpture components include:

#1, 2, 5, and 7 plastic bottles

Aluminum and steel cans

Aluminum foil and pie plates

Corrugated cardboard

Milk and juice cartons

Newspaper, including inserts

Glass bottles and jars

6-pack rings

Computers

 

The public is invited to see the sculptures on display at the Cary Towne Center between November 15, 2003 and November 21, 2003 . Prizes for the winning sculptures are being donated by Bullwinkle’s, Carolina Recycling Assoc., Cary Towne Center , Crossroads 20, JellyBeans, The Ice House, The Loop, and REI.

 

Founded in 1997, America Recycles Day is a nationwide campaign to help spread the word about recycling and buying items made from recycled materials.  In 2002, over 140,000 pledges to recycle and buy recycled products were entered for the national awards.  See www.americarecyclesday.org.
