SEWER SPILL DISCOVERED IN CARY

CARY, NC – Town of Cary crews report finding evidence of a sewage spill on Tuesday afternoon around a manhole at 130 Evans Road, just north of the intersection of Evans Road and Weston Parkway. Although estimating the actual amount of the spill has been made difficult because of the wide variation in wastewater flows due to recent rains, officials expect that the amount was between 1,000 and 2,500 gallons. While there was no overflow in progress when crews were on the scene, it is believed that the overflow did reach Lake Crabtree. No fish kill was observed. While the actual cause of the overflow has not been determined, the manhole cover had been dislodged. Crews have repositioned it and secured it with bolts.

The Clean Water Act requires public notice in the form of a news release issued by public works operators within 48 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters. Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
