Statement from Pam Almond, wife of George Almond, the Cary police officer who was shot in the line of duty on the night of Oct. 10, 2001.

"On behalf of my husband and our family, we want to thank the entire community for the outpouring of love, concern and support during this time. George was discharged from the hospital today, and we have a long road to recovery ahead of us. Your continued support is a blessing and will help us through the challenges ahead.

I would like to extend a special thanks to the Cary Police Department and their families, all of our friends and family; our church, Apex Baptist; my workplace, AB Combs Elementary; and the doctors, nurses and therapists at WakeMed Rehab and Duke for all they have done. Thank you."

Pam Almond has indicated that she is not available for interviews at this time and asked that the family’s privacy be respected. At a later date, George and Pam would like to make a public statement. FUND ESTABLISHED TO HELP WOUNDED OFFICER

 

Cary, NC – With a seed contribution of $1,000, Branch, Banking & Trust has established a trust fund to help Cary Police officer George F. Almond and his family. Those wishing to contribute may visit any Triangle branch of BB&T. Checks payable to the George F. Almond Trust Fund can also be mailed to the Cary Police Department, PO Box 8005, Cary, NC 27512-8005 in care of Lt. Matt Wentz.

Cary Police have a suspect in custody in last night’s shooting of Cary Police officer George F. Almond. At approximately 11:49 PM, Wednesday, October 10, 2001, Officer Almond, 29, was shot once in the head with a 9mm handgun. Almond was performing a traffic stop involving a white 2001 Oldsmobile Alero on US 1 & 64 at Walnut Street in Cary.

Officer Almond is the first Cary Police officer shot by a suspect while on duty. He remains in the care of WakeMed hospital in Raleigh.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY, CHARGES PENDING
IN CARY POLICE OFFICER SHOOTING

 

Cary, NC – Cary Police have a suspect in custody in last night’s shooting of Cary Police officer George F. Almond. Charges are pending against Emory Scott Bivins, 28, of Cary, who is facing one count of Felonious Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill or Inflicting Serious Injury, a Class C felony that carries a sentence of 44 months-210 months in jail. Bivins is expected to be transported from the Cary Police Department to the Wake County Public Safety Center in Raleigh later today.

As part of the investigation, police have searched the suspect vehicle and a home in Garner, NC as well as the suspect’s residence in Cary.

"Getting so far in this case so fast was a result of a lot of hard work by a very diverse team," said Lt. Chris Hoina, head of Cary’s Criminal Investigations Unit. "We had a plan and worked that plan, and fortunately, it appears to paid off."

Agencies assisting Cary have included Garner Police, the State Bureau of Investigation, the State Highway Patrol, the US Marshall’s office, and the Wake County City-County Bureau of Investigation. Also assisting were Cary EMS and the Cary Fire Department.

At approximately 11:49 PM, Wednesday, October 10, 2001, Officer Almond, 29, was shot once in the head with a 9mm handgun. Almond was performing a traffic stop involving a white 2001 Oldsmobile Alero on US 1 & 64 at Walnut Street in Cary. The car had been leased to Cary resident John Lane by Enterprise Leasing, 1859-A North Harrison Avenue, Cary; the company is based in Charlotte, NC. Investigators believe that Lane, an associate of Bivins, was out of North Carolina when the incident occurred.

Almond is the first time a Cary Police officer has been shot by a suspect while on duty. He remains in the care of WakeMed hospital in Raleigh.

SUSPECT VEHICLE LOCATED
IN OVERNIGHT SHOOTING OF CARY POLICE OFFICER

 

Cary, NC – The suspect vehicle in Wednesday night’s shooting of a Cary Police officer has been located in Garner, NC. Under a mutual aid agreement, Cary Police are joining Garner police, the State Bureau of Investigation, the US Marshall’s office, and the Wake County City-County Bureau of Investigation in Garner at this hour examining the vehicle, a white 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, license plate # NXC-3888 leased from Enterprise Leasing based in Charlotte, NC.

Police are also attempting to question individuals in Garner who may be connected to the case, and they continue to look for Cary resident John Lane, 26, who is listed as the lessor of the suspect vehicle.

This is the first time a Cary Police officer has been shot by a suspect while on duty.

At approximately 11:49 PM, Wednesday, October 10, 2001, Cary Police Officer George F. Almond, 29, was shot once in the forehead with what is believed to be a 9mm handgun. Almond was performing a traffic stop involving the suspect vehicle. The shooting occurred in the northbound lane of US 1 & 64 at Walnut Street. The officer was taken to WakeMed hospital in Raleigh.
