HELP SOUGHT IN SOLVING CARY ROAD RAGE CASE

CARY, NC – The Town of Cary’s Police Department is asking for your help in apprehending two suspects involved in a recent road rage incident in Cary. About 7:30 PM on August 23rd, Rodney Benfield, 38, and his mother, Ruth Benfield, 60, were attacked by a driver and struck by his vehicle following a brief altercation after a near-miss traffic incident.

Benfield and his mother were leaving Chatham Estates at 1400 SE Maynard Road in Cary. As they pulled out of Chatham Estates, another vehicle, possibly a blue Chrysler New Yorker, was pulling in. As this blue vehicle pulled in, it almost struck Benfield’s vehicle, and Benfield yelled out of the window at the driver of the blue car. Upon arriving at 1235 Selwyn Lane just off of Pebble Creek Drive, Benfield noticed that the blue vehicle had followed. Benfield exited his vehicle, approached the suspect blue vehicle, and apologized for yelling at the driver back at Chatham Estates. The driver of the blue suspect vehicle, who by this time had exited the car and was standing beside his front passenger door, responded by saying that Benfield "would have to suffer tougher consequences". The suspect then reached inside the blue vehicle, pulled out a pipe, and struck Benfield in the head. The suspect’s passenger moved to the driver’s seat of the blue vehicle, and the suspect then climbed into the passenger's seat. As these two left the scene, the rear of their blue vehicle fishtailed, striking both Benfield and his mother, who was also out of the car by this time. A witness reported seeing the right rear wheel run over both victims. Both victims were admitted to Western Wake Hospital, but have since been released. Ruth Benfield suffered a broken hip, lacerations and abrasions. Rodney Benfield received a severe laceration to the head and numerous abrasions.

The first suspect is described as a black male, 25-30 years old, 5’7" – 5’8", 135-145 lbs., short black hair, brown eyes, medium build, wearing a multi-colored button-up shirt and blue jeans. This suspect was the driver at first, then switched to the passenger seat upon leaving the scene. The other suspect is a white male, 25-30 years old, 5’9" – 5’10", 200-210 lbs., short red hair, fair complexion, large build, mustache and goatee. He was wearing a light-colored shirt. This suspect switched from the passenger to driver’s seat during the incident.
