CARY POLICE INVESTIGATE VEHICLE LARCENIES,
URGE EXERCISING CAUTION WHEN EXERCISING

CARY, NC – The Town of Cary Police Department is asking for your help in preventing as well as solving a string of break-ins to motor vehicles that appear to be occurring in and around popular exercise spots throughout the Triangle. Last week, four cars were broken into in Bond Park; cars were also broken into at area health clubs. Suspects appear to be placing a screwdriver in the bottom edge of the window to quietly pop and shatter the glass, enter the cars, and take purses and wallets that are left in plain view. Witnesses have identified the suspect vehicle as a tan, late 1980's Lincoln Continental.

In many cases, thieves are, within a matter of minutes, using the stolen credit cards to purchase high-priced merchandise at nearby stores. Police suspect that the merchandise is likely being fenced to provide cash for drugs.

"These sorts of crimes are really a double wammy," said Cary Police Lieutenant Chris Hoina. "If we can stop the break-ins, we make a real difference in the whole cycle of crime."

Whether at parks, health clubs, or shopping at the mall, citizens are cautioned to exercise prudent measures with identifying materials.

Businesses can also help.

"While it may seem to be an inconvenience to businesses as well as their customers, it’s imperative that clerks check for matching signatures on credit cards and ask to see ID’s," added Hoina. "This is especially important for businesses that sell small, high-priced items like jewelry, appliances, and electronics."

With this release, the Town of Cary is launching a public education campaign to reinforce these prevention messages, especially with the upcoming holiday season. Cary will be printing and distributing special info cards for citizens and businesses to reinforce the crime prevention tips. Information will also be included on the Town’s website as well in utility bills and on the Town’s government access channel. Finally, the Town will be working with the Chamber of Commerce and business leaders to encourage steps that crack down on identity fraud.

Cary Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification and apprehension of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes. Anyone with information may contact Crime Stoppers at 226-CRIME (226-2746); for Cary Police (press 3 at the prompt) or call 919-469-4017. All calls will be kept CONFIDENTIAL.
