FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 8, 2001
MIDDLE CREEK COMMUNITY CENTER - NOW OPEN!
CARY, NC – The Town of Cary Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is pleased to announce the opening of the Middle Creek Community Center. Situated on the campus of Middle Creek High School and adjacent to Middle Creek Park, the 13,700 square foot center features activity and meeting space and a gymnasium.
The center and park will provide a wealth of recreational and leisure opportunities to Cary residents and others who reside in the Southeast Cary area. The community center was developed through a collaboration between the Town of Cary and the Wake County Public School System. Park/School partnerships enable both parties to benefit from pooled resources, allowing each access to facilities far superior to those possible had they developed the site independently. The community center, Middle Creek High School and phase one of Middle Creek Park were developed as one large project at a cost of $4,961,758. Funding was provided by Wake County and Cary bonds and general funds. The Community Center is located in the high school and includes an auxiliary gym that belongs to the high school but is available to the community center after school hours.
The Parks, Greenways and Bikeways Master Plan, adopted in July 1998, identified the need for six community centers by 2010. Middle Creek Community Center is the second center to come on line since the February 1999 bond referendum. Bond Park Community Center opened in February 2000.
In addition to the community center, the Town is putting the finishing touches on phase one of Middle Creek Park at the same location. Scheduled to come on-line in the spring of 2002, the 100-acre park will initially focus on athletic activities. Features include 8-court tennis facility, and a 4-field softball complex with a central control tower housing concession and restroom facilities. These facilities will be used jointly by the Town and the school. Phase 2 of the park will include walking trails, soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, a playground, and a picnic pavilion.
Like the Town’s other community centers, Middle Creek Community Center is a full service facility. Registration for any Town of Cary Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department program may be handled at the Center. Likewise, rooms at the center, the center’s gymnasium, and any picnic shelter in the Town of Cary system may be reserved.
The Center comprises the southernmost end of Middle Creek High School at 123 Middle Creek Park Avenue. Hours of operation are 9:00 AM-10:00 PM on weekdays, 9:00 AM-6:00 PM on Saturdays and 1:00-6:00 PM on Sundays. The Center is closed on Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Center’s telephone number is 919-771-1295. For additional information about the center visit the Town’s web site at
