CARY HELPS SECOND-GRADERS PLANT IN THE FALL,
CELEBRATE IN THE SPRING
CARY, NC – The grounds of Oak Grove Elementary School will have more shade and better air thanks to a tree planting partnership between the school and The Town of Cary. Debbie Harbin’s second grade class along with Town staff and some adult volunteers will plant thirty (30) shade trees on the school grounds Wednesday, November 15th beginning at 1:00 PM.
The planting is the next step in a project that has brought tree study into the classroom, including a visit from Town of Cary Horticultural Planner, Shaub Dunkley. The project will culminate next spring when students, volunteers, and staff meet onsite to hold a joint Arbor Day celebration of the planted trees. Between now and next spring, the students will continue to study trees and keep a tree journal. The students will use Arbor Day as an opportunity to share what they have learned and to celebrate trees through poems, pictures and songs.
"While Arbor Day is an important springtime tradition, spring is really a poor time to plant trees in North Carolina," said Dunkley. "This planting project allows for the development of good horticultural habits while preserving important celebrations."
The trees for the planting project are being made possible through the Town of Cary’s Trees For Cary program and through a tree grant program of the Regional Appearance Committee for Triangle J Council of Governments.
