FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 9, 2000
CARY BEGINS DELIVERING CHECKS TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
CARY, NC – Forty-three public schools in Wake County might think
that Santa Claus has come early this year as the Town of Cary today begins
distributing millions of dollars in its "first of its kind in the
State economic development through education" initiative. After a
brief 9:30 AM ceremony at Town Hall today, Town Council members will head
out to nearly a dozen of the qualifying schools to hand-deliver checks and
talk briefly with principals and teachers about their plans for the money.
Checks for the rest of the public schools will be handed out at tonight’s
regular Town Council meeting. Part of this year’s Town of Cary operating
budget, the Cary Council appropriated $3.7 million—or, about $200 per
child--for its 2000-2001 Fiscal Year.
Qualifying schools must have a minimum of 30 students who reside in
Cary, and they must present detailed plans for how the funds would be
used, including a method to assess the relative effectiveness of the
donation at the end of the school year. This year, Town of Cary funds are
being distributed as follows:

In September, the Town signed a $215,000 contract with Wake Education
Partnership to handle requests from the Wake County Public School System
and the 13 charter schools in Wake County. There are about 20,500 Cary
school children in Wake County. About 18,500, or 90 percent, of these
attend public schools.
Cary also hopes to make the same "$200 per Cary Child" offer
to qualifying non-public and home schools based on a process currently set
to be discussed by the Town Council in December.
For more information, see "School Funding Project" under WHAT’S
NEW on the Town’s website at www.townofcary.org.
