Regional Transportation Initiatives

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   October 17, 2000

Notice Of Upcoming Meeting

The third Steering Committee meeting for the Regional Transportation Strategy study will be held on Monday, October 23, Noon to 2:00 P.M., at the RDU Airport Authority Building. The purpose of the study is to identify transportation improvements of regional significance that are needed to ensure a reasonable level of long-term mobility for the Triangle, determine their cost, and identify and assess potential funding sources to pay for these needs. There is a growing recognition that the existing transportation plans for the region will not provide the level of mobility the public expects. Additional improvements need to be identified and the cost determined.

The study is being undertaken in three phases:

  • Phase I – Assemble available plans and data to identify regional deficiencies and funding needs.
  • Phase II – Identify and assess transportation improvements that address regional needs.
  • Phase III – Quantify funding shortfalls and potential revenue alternatives.

The Steering Committee consists of representatives from the Cities of Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Cary, the Triangle Transit Authority, the Triangle J Council of Governments, Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The study commenced in July and will be completed in January 2001. The Steering Committee will meet monthly.
