NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 20, 2000 GRANT AWARD WILL AID IN MAJOR GREENWAY EXTENSION CARY, NC – The North Carolina Department of Transportation Enhancement Program has awarded the Town of Cary Parks Recreation and Cultural Resources $231,000 towards Phase IV of the Black Creek Park Greenway which will extend the greenway two miles from Maynard Road--near Godbold Park-- to High House Road. The Town hopes to use the money to hire a consultant in 2001 for planning and design work, followed by public input. Construction should take place in 2002. The Black Creek Greenway is the Town of Cary’s most popular greenway and provides greenway access to Lake Crabtree County Park, William B. Umstead State Park, and two Cary community parks. "Our goal is to link neighborhoods to parks, schools, and business using off-road, non-motorized transportation routes," said Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Resources Principal Planner Doug McRainey. "The Black Creek Greenway will eventually reach Bond Park, which ultimately will serve as the hub for the Town of Cary’s greenway system." Cary has about 11.5 miles of greenways open to the public, with another 9.5 miles having been budgeted for or being planned or under construction (including this project).
