KWANZAA, THE TRADITION CONTINUES IN CARY
CARY, NC – The sixth annual Kwanzaa celebration will take place on Wednesday, December 27, 2000 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Cary Community Center, 404 N. Academy Street in downtown Cary. The theme of this year’s celebration is "The Tradition Continues." The celebration includes fun for the whole family with an ethnic food and vendor market and craft activities for children. This event provides all area residents with the opportunity to participate in an event that honors African-American people and their culture. Admission is free of charge.
Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, but rather a celebration for all people focusing on family, friends and community. This year’s celebration features speakers and performances starting at noon with a welcome by Lester Thomas, president of the Ujima Group, followed by candle lighting, Imagé fashion show, Southeast Raleigh High School Gospel Choir, featured speaker Wake County Commissioner Linda Coleman, the Vareen School of Dance, and finally the reggae sounds of Jamrock, one of the most well-known reggae bands in the Triangle area.
The Town of Cary co-sponsors the Kwanzaa Celebration through the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department with The Ujima Group, Inc., a non-profit group that promotes cultural diversity through educational programs and the arts.
