CARY GEARS UP FOR NATIONAL

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

CARY -- The Town of Cary will join with cities throughout the country in an effort to educate citizens on the dangers of fire during National Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, 1997. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, "Know when to go; react fast to fire", emphasizes the importance of escape planning at home and in public places.

October 5-10, Cary Fire will sponsor a series of activities at the Cary Towne Center to reinforce this theme, including puppet shows, tours of the Fire Safety House, CP&L’s Electrical Safety Simulator, and the State Farm 911 Simulator. Smokey Bear will also be on hand. Events will be held throughout the day and into the evening, Monday-Friday, October 5-10.

Puppet Show - For school classes by appointment

CP&L - Will demonstrate for classes

For general public every 45 minutes

* Fire Safety House will be located in the parking lot near Sears

Puppets Firefighter Frank and friends will teach valuable safety behaviors through song. Lessons include "crawl low in smoke, don’t play with matches, and stop/drop/roll". CP&L’s portable electrical hazard simulator makes learning about safety more fun and effective. A representative form CP&L will be available to guide citizens through a tour of this model home and teach how to use electricity safely. State Farm Insurance Company will provide its interactive 911 simulator to teach citizens, especially children, how to call 911 and get emergency help. The simulator includes a real phone and asks questions an emergency dispatcher would ask. The Forest Service’s larger than life Smokey Bear will remind everyone to take care in preventing forest fires. In Cary’s Fire Safety House, children will be able to practice escaping from their bedroom should fire occur. Firefighters will be present to provide instruction on this live-saving skill.

Cary’s Fire Prevention Week activities will culminate in the celebration of the Fire Department’s 75th anniversary on Saturday, October 11th. Festivities begin downtown at 11:30 a.m. with a parade, followed by a traditional fire engine "housing" at Station 2 and a "combat challenge" between local fire departments at Cary High School. Kids can tour Cary’s Fire Safety House, the ladder truck, and a rescue helicopter. Engines from throughout the region will be on display.

"This is one of the most intensive educational efforts we coordinate all year," said Cary Fire Chief Wayne House. "We make every effort to reach out to all parts of our community to help citizens, old and young, learn and re-learn important fire safety behavior," he added.
