CARY FIRE DEPARTMENT

PUTS FINISHING TOUCHES ON

WEEKEND CELEBRATION

CARY -- Plans for Cary Fire Department’s 75th anniversary are almost complete. With only a few days left until Saturday’s celebration, members of Cary’s Fire Department are wrapping up last minute details for one of the biggest events ever coordinated by the group.

"We couldn’t be more excited," said Capt. Bob McSorley, who is spearheading the celebration. "Most of the people around here have never seen many of the activities we have planned. We hope everyone will be able to come out and enjoy the day with us."

Festivities will begin downtown at 11:30 a.m. with a parade of over 80 entries, 45 of which are firefighting apparatus from around the region. Mrs. North Carolina will be one of the many dignitaries also riding in the parade.

The parade will be followed by a traditional fire engine "housing" at Station 2 which involves the dedication of the department’s newly restored 1953 Seagrave’s fire pumper. One of the Town’s two new fire engines will also be blessed by area clergy.

After the activities at Station 2, the department will host a "combat challenge" between local fire departments across the street at Cary High School. Firefighters will compete for trophies and prizes in four timed events which involve the kinds of things done every day on the job such as carrying large fans, pulling charged fire hose, and dragging victims.

While at Cary High School, kids can tour Cary’s Fire Safety House and a rescue helicopter. Red’s Rescue Team of Garner will conduct a demonstration off of Cary’s ladder truck, and engines from throughout the area will be on display. There will also be face-painting and clowns as well as vendors selling refreshments and memorabilia.

Cary’s 75th Anniversary is the culmination of National Fire Prevention Week activities. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, "Know when to go; react fast to fire", emphasizes the importance of escape planning at home and in public places. Throughout this week, Cary Fire is sponsoring a series of activities at the Cary Towne Center to reinforce this theme, including puppet shows, tours of the Fire Safety House, CP&L’s Electrical Safety Simulator, and the State Farm 911 Simulator. Smokey Bear will also be on hand. Events will be held throughout the day and into the evening, Monday-Friday, October 5-10.
