CITIZENS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN TOWN ISSUES

CARY -- The Town of Cary is looking for citizen volunteers to fill as many as 20 positions on numerous boards and commissions. The Town will be recruiting for commission members from now through December 1, 1997. Appointments will be made at the first Town Council meeting in January for terms to begin on February 1, 1998.

"Citizen participation is extremely important in Cary’s Town government," said Town Clerk Sue Rowland. She noted that because all of the Town’s boards have vacancies, there is likely something of interest for just about anyone.

Town boards and commissions include: Appearance Commission, Cable TV Advisory Board, Parks/Rec/Cultural Resources Advisory Board, Planning & Zoning Board, Sister Cities Commission, Utility Board of Adjustment, and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Except where an unexpired term is being filled, all appointments will be for three years.

While meeting times and time commitments vary for each group, Town officials stress that the benefits citizens receive are a constant. "When residents are involved in the decision-making process, they feel better about the direction their Town takes because they more fully understand the complexity of the issues," said Town Manger Bill Coleman. "Their participation makes our government and our community stronger," he added.

Anyone interested in being considered for a board appointment can find detailed information, including an application, on the Town’s website, <www.ci.cary.nc.us>. Information is also available from the Town Clerk by dialing 469-4011.
