Utility Rates for Single-Family Residential Customers
View rate tables and an explanation.
Water Meters
Single family residential customers who have a water meter for all domestic use - indoor and outdoor - are billed according to a four-tiered rate structure. All water passing through the meter incurs a sewer charge as well as a water charge.
Irrigation Meters
Single family residential customers who irrigate with drinkable water through a separate meter are billed based on a two-tiered rate structure - below or above 15,000 gallons per month. That amount is the benchmark given Cary's average residential lot size of .25 acres plus a 3,000-gallon cushion. (The recommended amount of water is one inch per week, including rainfall.)
Even though the irrigation season typically lasts only about three months, single family residential customers with a separate meter using potable water are billed based on this budgeted amount year-round.
Customers in this classification who irrigate lots of greater than .25 acres may be eligible for an "expanded" tier. Lots that qualify are billed in two tiers:
Tier 1 - the budgeted amount or less
Tier 2 - Use over the budgeted amount
Customers who have larger than average size lots may contact the water conservation division to have their property measured and their budgeted amount reestablished.
Reclaimed Water
Some homes and businesses have access to highly treated wastewater that the Town has reclaimed for purposes such as irrigation and industrial cooling. This reduces the amount of drinking water that is used for such purposes.
