Overview

The Town of Cary is taking steps to address odor at and near the South Cary Water Reclamation Facility.

In November 2006, the Town completed a $654,000 odor control project.  The project was an initial success but odor has been an intermittent problem since spring 2007.

Actions Taken

- Odor testing
- Site investigations and visits
- Sealing manholes
- Odor control manhole inserts
- Flushing and cleaning of lines
- Addition of multiple odor control chemicals into the collection system

Current Status

The Town has installed a leased portable biofilter to assist with peak odor-loading periods. The equipment is installed in the first manhole above where the current permanent biofilter is located. The goal is to vacuum additional odorous compounds from the air and treat it in the new biofilter.

The Town has contracted with Hazen and Sawyer to tackle odor control at the plant and to identify the source of the problem and develop a solution. Hazen and Sawyer are nationally recognized experts in odor identification and control.  The study is expected to be complete by spring 2008. The final report will recommend a permanent long-term solution to the problem.

Hazen and Sawyer will be making a presentation on March 6, 2008 to the community at the Middle Creek Community Center at 7 p.m.
