Overview

The Town has completed the distribution of nearly 33,000 rollout carts for household garbage that should be rolled to the curb each week. Cary's durable carts are designed for easy rolling and are effective at controlling pests. Truck operators will dump the carts using an automated arm.

Now that your rollout cart has arrived, your yard waste will be collected on the same day as your household garbage and recyclables - your current garbage collection day.

Using Rollout Carts Properly

Please place your cart at the curb – not in the street or on the sidewalk or meter box – by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Set the cart at the curb with the arrows pointing to the street as indicated on the lid. The cart should be placed away from light poles, mailboxes or fire hydrants. There should be ample room between the cart and your recycling bin and yard waste.

To keep the neighborhood looking neat, please remove the emptied cart from the curb as soon as possible and before 6 a.m. the next day at the latest.

See photos below for examples of why a rollout cart placement does or doesn’t meet the rules.

More on Using the Carts

Everyone who receives a rollout cart should place all household garbage inside their cart for pick up. Excess garbage that will not fit inside your cart can be taken to the Citizen Convenience Center located at 313 N. Dixon Ave. at no charge.

If over time it becomes clear that your family needs more space for garbage, we’ll be happy to deliver a second cart. The charge for each additional cart is $3.50 per month and will be added to your utility bill. To order additional carts, please call (919) 469-4090.

Citizens may also request a special garbage collection to pick up excess garbage that does not fit inside their cart. Each special garbage collection is subject to a $10 fee.

Please consider keeping your old garbage can and using it for yard waste. If you want to dispose of your old garbage can, you can take it to the Citizen Convenience Center or leave it at the curb on your collection day. To ensure pick-up, place your empty can upside down with a sign stating, “Please take this trash.” Solid waste crews will take it away for you.

Customers with Physical Limitations

If your doctor feels that you are physically unable to bring the new rollout cart to the curb, you may ask that the Town assist you with curbside collection.

Complete a Curbside Assistance Request Form [HTML] [PDF] to have your individual situation evaluated. Even with curbside assistance, you will receive a cart.

Customers in Town Homes & Condominiums

Town home and condominium customers who receive Town solid waste collection and live in a building with three or more units will continue receiving backyard collection. Continue using your existing garbage can - a rollout cart will not be issued. Household garbage, recyclables, curbside trash and yard waste will be taken on your regular collection day.
