Overview
To protect the water system, the Town is installing devices to prevent water in the pipes of businesses and homes from draining back into main lines in streets. The devices, back flow prevention valves, guard against contamination that conceivably could be drawn into the system if the line in the street loses pressure. Cary has required back flow prevention at certain types of buildings for many years. The Town is formalizing the program in light of changes in state regulations and also nationwide attention on water system protection. Other large cities and towns in North Carolina have these programs. See the Cross Connection Control ordinance (PDF or HTML). Residential Testing Program In 2008, the Town of Cary launched a new program that allows residential irrigation customers to have the Town arrange and manage residential backflow assembly testing. This project is designed to inspect and test approximately 7,400 backflow prevention assemblies throughout Cary and Morrisville. Residential testing will begin June 2, 2009.
