Lost Colony and Wright Brothers Memorial
Before Jamestown and Plymouth, a group of 120 people bravely established the first English settlement in the New World on Roanoke Island in 1587. See their amazing story at the Waterside Theatre, home of the outdoor drama The Lost Colony. On the second day we visit Kitty Hawk, NC where Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved the first successful airplane flights in 1903. We have included free time to enjoy the downtown Manteo and the beaches too! Cost includes transportation, hotel, admissions, breakfast and dinner. Lunch and purchases are on your own. Discover History & Music in Johnston County
Let us begin the day with a visit to historic downtown Smithfield and the Ava Gardner Museum. The Ava Gardner Museum showcases this 1950s movie star’s life, from growing up near Smithfield to her discovery by Hollywood. After lunch we will be singing our favorite songs, laughing out loud, and feeling a stirring of pride for this great country at the Rudy Theatre in Selma. Mountain Top Adventure

Kennedy’s Baptism of Fire
Upon his inauguration in January 1961, President Kennedy was faced with crises brewing in Laos, the Congo, and Vietnam. In each case, the United States (under President Eisenhower) had supported a pro-western political movement under threat from socialist, separatist, and/or communist forces. As these situations deteriorated, Kennedy was forced to decide whether U.S. military intervention could turn the tide of these conflicts. In his talk, Professor Boettcher will discuss how restraint in Laos and the Congo led to escalation in Vietnam, setting the
U.S. on course toward America’s longest war.

The Conflict in Darfur, Sudan
The conflict in Darfur, in western Sudan, has caused the death of hundreds of thousands of civilians and the forcible displacement of millions. The United States Congress has declared that the actions of the government of Sudan against the people of Darfur constitute genocide. Dr. Sarah Lischer will analyze the various facets of the conflict, which are generally overlooked in mainstream reporting. It will also relate that analysis to the grave implications for the safety of civilians and the potential policies to resolve the conflict. Cary Walk-Abouts Spring Challenge FREE
Join the Cary Walk-About Club and walk with us! The Cary Senior Center has teamed with Brookdale Senior Living, and we are in the middle of our Spring Walking Challenge. There is no fee to join the Cary Walk-About Club. Wear walking shoes to this meeting because we will walk Bond Park after the meeting. Join us for our group walks each Friday at 8:30 a.m. throughout April, May and June.

Canoeing – Beginners
Learn basic paddling and safety skills for tandem (2-person) canoeing in a short, introductory course. Canoeing – Intermediate
This program expands on the foundations of the Beginners Canoeing course. Safety concerns related to larger bodies of water will be discussed. On-the-water focus will be refinement of the basic strokes and introduction of more strokes and maneuvers. Additional material may cover topics, such as canoe transport, handling capsizes, gear choices for larger bodies of water, and canoe design. Canoe rental is included. Participants are required to have taken Canoeing for Beginners.
