Overview

The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is preparing for a new neighborhood park at the southwest corner of Walnut Street and Lawrence Road. The Town purchased the 11-acre parcel in 2002. See a vicinity map and a detailed map showing existing conditions.

Development of the park is part of a broader effort by the Town to improve the Walnut Street corridor as outlined in the Southeast Area Plan.

OBS Landscape Architects of Raleigh was selected to design the park. The firm designed Phase II of White Oak Park and two Town of Cary greenway projects. On June 12, 2008, Town Council awarded the construction contract for the park to Asphalt Experts Inc.

The estimated cost of construction is $1.5 million.

Construction began by August 2008
Construction complete by May 2009

Master Plan

The master plan for the park was adopted by Town Council on March 9, 2006.

Public Art

In October 2006, Artist Barbara Grygutis asked the community for information about their neighborhood to aid in her design for artwork at Walnut Street Park. Two strong themes emerged: The desire for art using native materials and the use of the natural environment as a possible theme. Grygutis chose to work within the shape of the promenade and use brick as the "art" material. The work of art titled "Imaginary Garden" is a complex woven design in native brick which starts at the parking lot where the promenade meets the parking pavement and follows the subtle curve of the promenade where it bursts into a blossom to create a plaza at the intersection of Lawrence and Walnut Street.
