Call for Artists - US 1/64 Pedestrian Greenway Bridge

Overview

The Town of Cary’s Citizen Advisory Artist Selection Panel has selected the concept design presented by artist Michael Stutz for public art that will be used on a pedestrian greenway bridge to span U.S. Highway 1/64 just north of Cary Parkway. Artist Judy Bales was recommended as an alternate.

The bridge will link with two parks – Kids Together Park and McDonald Woods Park - and will provide the only north-south connection with Cary’s proposed extended greenway system. The pedestrian bridge will be a highly visible, identifying landmark for the Town of Cary, and the selected public art project will successfully reflect the energy of Cary’s dynamic community and help create a unique, distinctive and memorable destination for visitors.

Project Budget – The total budget for this project shall not exceed $165,000.

Public Art in Cary

The Town of Cary has adopted a Public Art Master Plan that provides guidelines and recommendations for integrating and placing public art throughout the Town. The public art program’s goals include:

1. To use public art to enhance the identity of the Town locally, regionally, and nationally;
2. To contribute to the visual character and texture of the Town;
3. To use public art as a means to foster the community’s sense of spirit, pride, and community values;
4. To recognize that the Town of Cary is a leader in neighborhood and community planning initiatives and integrate public art into those initiatives;
5. To use the public art program to provide opportunities to engage citizens in the public process in meaningful and responsive ways;
6. To enhance the individual’s experience of public spaces;
7. To recognize public art’s contribution as an economic catalyst;
8. To make public art and artistic experiences available to the public;
9. To put art in public view.

The Public Art Master Plan will guide the process for this public art project.
