White Oak Creek Banner

Overview

The White Oak Creek Greenway project, Phases III & IV, includes the development of more than six miles of greenway trail extending from Bond Park to Green Level Church Road. Currently, there are 2.8 miles of existing trail located between Bond Park and NC-55. This project will include linking these segments together to form one trail. The trail will be 10 feet wide and paved.

The paving of these segments will ultimately provide a direct trail connection from Bond Park to the American Tobacco Trail. In addition, once completed the White Oak Creek Greenway will link together Bond Park, Davis Drive Park, White Oak Park and the schools on Davis Drive with more than 10 subdivisions.

Goals

Primary short and long-term goals of this project include:
  • To ensure connectivity and continuity of the Town's regional greenway system as well as provide linkages to key destinations, open space and parks within the Town
  • To develop trails for the use for the largest number of persons, with consideration for their varying abilities, disabilities, needs, and interests
  • To encourage cooperation between public and private entities regarding trail usage and trail development.
  • To develop a greenway trail connecting Umstead State Park and Lake Crabtree with the American Tobacco Trail.

Budget - $4,094,100 (This project was awarded a $50,000 Recreational Trails Grant in 2002)

Project Details

  • Due to the length of this greenway project, it has been divided up into a series of segments. Below is a description of each segment.
  • Overall Map of Proposed White Oak Creek Greenway, Ph IV Alignment
  • Segment 1 – Bond Park to MacArthur Park Drive and NC-55 Segment

Location: Within Bond Park, the trail will begin at the Bond Park Community Center and terminate at the trail entrance to the Parkway Greenway. A separate spur trail will link the boathouse to the community center. The Macarthur Park trail segment will begin at the western side of the pedestrian tunnel which goes under Cary Parkway near YMCA Drive and continue west to MacArthur Drive, just south of Trailview Drive. The MacArthur Park trail segment will incorporate two pedestrian bridges 40 feet long.
    Length: .83 miles
    Budget: $571,000
    Status: Completed - June 2008

There will also be a spur trail adjacent to KC Farm Road which will provide trail access from Green Level West Road. This project is an important segment of the town’s goal to connect Lake Crabtree to the American Tobacco Trail via an off road pedestrian trail. This project is under construction and is being built at the same time as a new sewer line installation in this corridor.

    Background

The White Oak Creek Greenway Project is part of a Town-wide effort to develop a system of inter-linked bikeways and off-road trails. In 2003, Cary’s Town Council adopted the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Facilities Master Plan. This plan included recommendations for a greenway system of over 160 miles of greenways. This system of trails is designed to provide sufficient opportunities for pedestrian and/or bicycle access to places of employment, parks and schools without reliance on the automobile.  In addition, connections are recommended beyond Cary to Research Triangle Park, Umstead State Park, Jordan Lake, and Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway System.

In the long term, the White Oak Creek Greenway will link with the Black Creek Greenway within Bond Park. Eventually, these two greenway trails will total 14 miles and connect Lake Crabtree to the American Tobacco Trail, the 23 mile-long trail that will link Durham to southern Chatham County.
