The Town of Cary has decided to pursue the development of a community aquatics venue, which will provide facilities typical of a community center combined with competitive and recreational aquatic opportunities for Cary residents.
Details
The general purpose community center elements could include facilities such as gymnasiums, fitness areas, indoor track, climbing wall, program and meeting spaces, vending/food service, and/or other types of program spaces that might typically be included in a community center.
The aquatic portion of the facility will include three pools.
- An indoor 8 lane, 25-yard pool with spring board diving and spectator seating for 200.
- Indoor recreation pool - This pool will have water playground components, as well as the capability to allow for lap swimming, water aerobics, swim classes, and therapeutic recreation programs. Features should include waterslide, play feature, vortex, current channel and spa.
- Outdoor recreation pool should include a spiral slide, play feature, vortex, current channel, spray bar, tot slide, floatable raindrop (2), diving board, and five “funbrellas.”
Current Status
The Town is in the site selection and programming phase. This phase includes:
- Reviewing two potential sites for the location of the Community Aquatic Center. These include a site near the North Cary Park off Cary Parkway and a second site in west Cary near Green Level to Durham Road. Current work includes inventorying the natural resources and demographic data for each site.
- Developing the program for the community aquatic facility including determining the types of uses and amount of square footage for the facility.
- Developing preliminary cost estimates

Background
Approximately six years ago, the Town of Cary determined that in view of its commitment to the health and well being of its citizens, as well as the documented need to provide facility support for the growing sport of swimming within the Triangle area, it would fund the construction of an aquatic venue facility.
- In May 2005, $10 million in matching Hotel Occupancy and Prepared Food and Beverage Tax funds were approved regionally for use by the Town of Cary for its new Aquatic Center.
- Cary Town Council held a series of work sessions beginning in June 2006 to discuss the type and scale of the proposed facility (June 7, 2006; July 19, 2006; September 26, 2006; October 12, 2006).
- At a work session on November 8, 2006, Town Council approved a regional venue for an estimated cost of $30 million, conditional upon a private citizen group raising $5 million of the project cost.
- At a work session on April 10, 2007, Town Council voted to revise the original scope of the aquatics center from a regional venue model to a community center concept. Council also asked staff to focus on the Town’s existing North Cary and Hawes tract sites as prospective locations.
At a work session on January 8, 2008, Town Council did not approve either of the proposed sites and instead requested staff to look for additional sites for the aquatic facility in the north Cary and downtown Cary area. Town Council also requested staff to develop additional program alternatives.
Budget
The project is estimated to cost $23.8 million.
