Specialized Recreation Study Banner

Overview

In 2006, Cary Town Council approved funding for staff to implement a study and needs assessment for specialized recreation services in Cary. Specialized Recreation Services provide programs and services for the people with disabilities.

Specialized Recreation Services give persons with disabilities the opportunity to participate in activities and events within the community.  The Town currently works to make regular on-going classes accessible for persons with disabilities.  However, in some instances persons with disabilities need more specialized services and cannot be mainstreamed into existing programs.

There are many diverse levels of disabilities for which there is a definitive need for adaptive programming and services.  The demand for these types of services in the Town of Cary is presently unknown.

Project Description

The primary purpose of this study is to complete a community assessment in order to determine the need for specialized recreation services for Cary residents.  The study should identify and prioritize the demand for programs and services that should be considered.

The goals for this project include:

  • Identify and evaluate existing private for profit and nonprofit community resources and government agencies providing services within Cary.
  • Collection and analysis of demographic information on the general population to include categorizing types of disabilities.
  • Identify specific recreation programs and services to be considered by the Town to meet the needs of citizens.
  • Identify partnerships and potential funding sources available to the Town.
  • Provide a recommendation on how demand for recreation services might be addressed by the Town and prioritize programs and services for consideration.
