Beginning February 25

Cary residents may register using EZ-REG Phone or Web. Deposits for Summer Day and Teen Adventure Camps are not accepted when registering over the phone; the entire fee is due at the time of registration. Mail-in registration forms will be randomly opened and processed daily. Waitlists will be formed as programs fill.

Summer Day and Teen Adventure Camp Special Payment Information

Full payment is required at the time of registration when using EZ-Phone. When registering by EZ-REG Mail-in, Walk-in or Web a $25 non-refundable deposit per child per session may be made to reserve a spot in Summer Day or Teen Adventure Camp with the balance due for all sessions by April 25, 2008. Balances not paid by April 25 will result in the space(s) being forfeited to persons on the waiting list.

Pottery Foundations Exploration (age 16 and up)

Camp isn’t just for kids any more! Join this concentrated program for new and experienced potters. Pottery Wheel Exploration (age 16 and up)

Focus entirely on wheel throwing techniques including correct centering methods, trimming, and overall design to produce well formed, aesthetic pieces. Class size is limited to five. Examine masks from many cultures, such as the ancient Greek theatrical masks, the exquisite Venetian masquerade masks and the Incan foil masks. Learn about the purposes of masks; how they are still used today and imagin a mask of the future. Come explore the imaginative power of this exciting art form! A point becomes a line, a line becomes a shape, a shape becomes a solid and a solid takes up space. A Soldier’s Life: Civil War Encampment (age 13-17)

Discover the fast growing hobby of Civil War Reenacting with emphasis on a typical North Carolina infantry regiment that passed through Cary in the waning days of the Civil War! Sessions will include discussion about uniforms, weapons, equipment and getting started with a unit. Also, experience the camp life of a typical soldier--an outdoor tent encampment at the Page-Walker with songs and stories from the period. A Soldier’s Life: Civil War Encampment 2 (age 13-18)

Continue building knowledge of Civil War reenacting by learning additional details concerning drill, music, and camping, with an emphasis on North Carolina infantry troops. Discuss rations and other 1860’s recipes as well as campfire cooking. Learn advanced drill techniques and the responsibilities of officers and NCOs, as well as what the common soldier would have carried on the march. A prior reenacting course is not required. Board Games of Yesterday and Today (age 9-14)

Tired of playing computer games and watching videos? This will focus on strategy board games from the past, including Risk, Stratego, Battleship, and others. Enjoy the ‘face to face’ interaction of an opponent while planning strategic moves. The week will end with a game tournament in each game. Card Games of Yesteryear (age 9-14)

Ever learn to play a game of cards with Grandma or Granddad? Recreate several lively card games including Pinochle, Set Back, Pounce, and Rummy in this week long camp. The simple pleasures of playing cards will come to life as you play games of ‘one-on-one’ as well as ‘partnerships.’ Learn what ‘meld’ is and how to play a ‘trump.’ Sorry folks, no gambling allowed! The week will end with a card game tournament, allowing students to practice what they’ve learned. Applause! Cary Youth Theatre offers process-oriented theatre classes, camps and workshops staffed by professional actors, designers, directors and teachers. Our goal is to inspire confidence and creativity in young theatre enthusiasts while encouraging the exploration and development of both skill and interest. Express yourself through drama! Learn how physical and vocal exercises, costume pieces and theatre games can inspire the creation and development of characters and skits.
