FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Current job openings
Every week we post a complete list of our current job openings in the Human Resources office and we record the job list on 24-Hour Town Hall, (919) 319-4500, code#283. We also post some openings with various services on the INTERNET.

Application Acceptance
We only accept applications for positions for which we are currently recruiting. However, you may call our office and request that an interest card be completed for you over the phone, or you may come by our office to complete one. We will notify you of the job vacancy by mailing the interest card to you.

Submitting a resume
Even if your resume has all of the necessary information, you must still complete a Town of Cary APPLICATION form when applying for an opening. You may use the resume as a supplemental piece if the Town of Cary application is filled in completely.

Applying for a job in person and expecting to talk to someone right away
The Town’s procedure is to receive applications in the Human Resources office up until 5:00 p.m. on the closing date posted. After this date, a Human Resources Representative reviews the qualifications of all applicants who applied by the closing date. The most competitive applications are referred to the hiring department. The hiring department will review the applications and call their top candidates for interviews.

Length of application screening process
The hiring department will normally start calling for interviews within 2 weeks after the closing date of a recruitment. For jobs that indicate "apply immediately, may be closed without notice", applicants are immediately screened for possible referral to the hiring department.

Consideration of applications
All applications received in Human Resources by the closing date are assured of consideration. We do not accept applications by FAX. Your application will be considered only for those vacancies you specify by title and vacancy number. If your application is referred and the hiring department would like to interview you, they will contact you to schedule an interview. Applicants are normally contacted by telephone to schedule an interview.

Closing dates for job openings
Closing dates are set at the time the recruitment is set up and are included in all recruitment advertising. The closing date is normally set for 2 weeks following the Monday when the job ad first appeared on our job opportunities list.

Notification when a job is filled
We do not personally notify each individual applicant. You may call (919) 319-4500, message code 284 or check the status of recruitment on the jobs page of this site (see next paragraph).

Status of recruitments
We do not personally notify each individual applicant. If you have questions about the status of a recruitment call (919) 319-4500, message code 284.

Length of time applications are kept active
Your application remains active for 60 days. If it has been more than 60 days since you completed an application for a previous job opening, you will be asked to complete another application. We encourage you to make a photocopy of your application before filling in the Position/Vacancy number and before signing it. You may then utilize that photocopy for jobs that may come open in the future by filling in the Position/Vacancy and providing an original signature.  We will be more than happy to make copies for you.

LEARNING ABOUT VACANCIES
The Human Resources Department administers the recruitment and selection of applicants for full-time and part-time staff vacancies. Vacant positions are published weekly in our Job Opportunities List . You can also remain up-to-date by calling our 24-hour Job Vacancy Line - (919) 319-4500, message code 283. Current Town employees should also review the Internal Only Vacancy List. If you are interested in a position that is not on our Job Opportunities List, do not complete an employment application. Instead, fill out an Employment Interest Form so we can notify you if the position becomes open.

OBTAINING AN APPLICATION
The Town of Cary application is available 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday from the Town's Human Resources Office at 316 N. Academy St. Directions to our offices are recorded on 24-Hour Town Hall, (dial area code 919, 319-4500 and enter code 153). The Human Resources Office will also mail applications upon request. COMPLETING THE APPLICATION
You must complete the Town's application form and sign and return the supplement, even though you may have already provided us with a letter or resume. Your application form is our primary source of information in considering you for employment. Please follow all instructions and answer questions completely. Applications may be typed or completed in ink. Identify the vacancies in which you are interested by title and vacancy number. If you want to apply for vacancies in different occupational areas, you must submit separate applications. (See note regarding photocopies of applications under Length Applications Are Kept Active).Incomplete applications or supplements will not be considered. Providing false or misleading information or documentation or concealing requested information to gain employment may result in your application being disqualified or in your dismissal, if employed. The disclosure of Equal Opportunity Information is voluntary. Its sole use is to monitor our recruitment efforts. This information is not shared with the hiring department and in no way affects you as an applicant.

SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION
We accept applications only for positions for which we are actively recruiting. For most positions, our minimum recruitment period is approximately 2 weeks. To ensure consideration, a Town of Cary application must be received in the Human Resources office by 5:00 p.m. on our closing date. Postmarks are not considered. A staff member is in the office until 5:00 p.m. each day to accept applications. We do not accept applications by FAX. Applications received after the closing date are considered only when the application pool is judged by us to be deficient in quality or quantity. When no closing date appears, the position may be filled without notice. Once submitted, the application becomes the property of the Town.

SCREENING, REFERRAL AND EMPLOYMENT
Your application will be considered only for those vacancies you specify by title and vacancy number. Your education, experience, skills, work record and availability will be evaluated in relation to job requirements. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applications will be referred to the hiring department. Due to the response to our recruitment efforts, not all applicants receive interviews. The hiring department will contact those applicants in which they are interested to discuss the vacancy further or to arrange a personal interview. If you have questions about the status of a recruitment call (919) 319-4500, message code 284.

If you are applying for a position designated as High Risk/Safety Sensitive (HRSS), you will be asked to submit to drug testing prior to being offered employment. Employees already employed by the Town currently in an HRSS position will not be required to submit to drug testing to obtain a transfer or promotion. Certain positions require physicals paid for by the Town. These physicals will only be scheduled after a job offer has been extended. Employment is contingent upon a positive recommendation from our physician.

REAPPLYING
If you wish to apply for another vacancy at a later date, you may use the application already on file providing that it is less than 60 days old and for a position in the same occupational area. You must complete and sign a Request for Additional Employment Consideration form and submit it to Human Resources. To assure consideration the form must be received in the Human Resources office by 5:00 p.m. on the closing date.

IDENTITY AND EMPLOYABILITY
If employed, you must submit proof of identity and eligibility for legal employment by your third day of work. The Human Resources Department can be contacted for a complete list of acceptable documents (example of most commonly used documents: driver's license, social security card/original birth certificate).
