How much vacation does a full-time, regular employee earn?

  • Vacation earned by employees having a workweek with greater or fewer hours than the basic workweek is determined in accordance with a formula.

Is there a limit to the amount of vacation hours I can carry over from year to year?
  • Yes, the maximum amount of vacation that can be carried over from one fiscal year to the next is 240 hours.
What happens if I have a vacation balance greater than the 240 limit?
  • Any accumulated vacation hours over the 240 limit are added to your current sick leave balance.
When does this conversion take place?
  • The 2008 date for converting excess vacation hours over 240 to sick leave is June 21, 2008. Previously, the conversion took place on the last day of the first full payroll period in the new calendar year. Beginning in 2006, that date was changed to coincide with the fiscal year.
Where can I find my current leave balances?
  • Your current leave balances are printed on your paycheck. Check with Human Resources or Payroll staff if you have additional questions.
When may an employee start using earned vacation days?
  • After six months of employment with the Town.
Does an employee have to get prior approval of his/her supervisor before taking vacation? How many holidays does the Town of Cary observe?
  • 11 or 12 (depending on how holidays fall within the calendar)
  • New Year's Day; Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday; Good Friday; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Veteran's Day; Thanksgiving (Thursday and Friday); and Christmas (two or three working days).
