Disability Benefits
What if an employee becomes disabled?- If an employee is unable to work due to a non work-related accident or illness and exhausts all available sick leave, the Town's self-insured Short Term Disability Policy pays one half of your normally scheduled hours up to a maximum of 26 weeks.

- If the disability is due to an accident, pay begins on the first full workday following the exhaustion of sick leave.
- If the disability is due to an illness, then pay cannot begin until at least seven calendar days have passed AND all sick leave has been exhausted.
- The number of weeks you are eligible for is based on years of service and is governed by the Short Term Disability Policy.

- There is access to an optional, voluntary disability policy with Colonial Life and Accident Insurance. Contact Craig Jones, Colonial Life Agent, by calling (919) 612-6425 for more information.
- Benefits are available from $400 per month to a maximum of $3,000 per month depending on age, income, benefit period, and occupational classification. The policy is available to all full and part-time regular employees.
- Examples: 3 month benefit - $400/month/Coverage for 1st day of accident or 8th day of sickness - Employee Cost - $5.50/pay period. 2 year benefit - $3000/month/Coverage for 1st day of accident or 8th day of sickness - Employee Cost - $79.20/pay period.
- Benefits are employee paid and voluntary (no Town contribution).
- Coverage is available for on and off the job sickness.
- Employees must complete an application and answer health questions (be approved through medical underwriting) to qualify for coverage. The policy is portable. Should an employee terminate employment, they may continue to keep the policy on an individual basis with the same coverage and premiums.
- Coverage for personal illness and injury and dependents is also available.
