Web Use Report January 2002
This is the fourth of bimonthly reports on Web use statistics for townofcary.org. The third major overhaul of the Web site was completed in July 2001, and statistics for this report reflect the topical focus of the site.
I. Summary of Activity
Web site activity during January 2002 increased by a substantial amount over November 2001 and even exceeded that of July 2001, previously the peak month of the four months analyzed thus far.
No simple explanation is obvious. Although the snowfall of Jan. 2-3 generated high interest in the new Winter Weather Information page, Web traffic overall was highest the following week. It is not clear yet whether July and January were uncharacteristically busy or if September and November were unusually slow.
The week of Jan. 7 was busiest with 48,719 requests for pages. The busiest day was Jan. 22 with 9,326 requests. In descending order, the busiest days on average were Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday and Monday. The least busy day was Saturday. The busiest hour on average was 2-3 p.m.

Feedback
The manager's office compiled an estimated 65-70 feedback messages during December 2001 and January 2002, including "spam" or advertising. Most messages concerned questions or comments about Town operations, including snow removal and garbage collection after the snowfall, rather than about management of Web content.
Web content messages included compliments and also comments about incorrect URL in a notice regarding the Bud newsletter (corrected) and incorrect directions to a park (corrected). Other suggestion included a request for a home page return button on a forms page, a request for a better search engine, a compliment and suggestion regarding the calendar, and a request for a more "horizontal" layout for online Bud. (The existing layout includes bookmarks, which allow the reader to avoid scrolling to a specific item.) A user in December was surprised that Utility Billing Online did not include a payment option. (Online payment has been available since mid-January.)
