Decision 2003

Cary voters go to the polls Oct. 7 to elect a mayor and three Town Council members.

Here is the list of names that will appear on the ballot:

Mayor - Glen D. Lang, Ernest F. McAlister, Julie A. Robison

At-Large - Wally Dawson, Michael A. Joyce, Harold Weinbrecht

District B - Don Frantz, Nels Roseland

District D - Marla Dorrel

Sept. 12 is the last day to register, change your party affiliation or your address. The registration form must be postmarked or hand delivered by Sept. 12.

You can vote early (but not often) if going to the polls on Election Day is not an option. Absentee voting requires no excuse.

“One-Stop Voting” begins Sept. 18, allowing you to obtain an absentee ballot and vote on the same trip to a “One-Stop Voting” location. For times and places, check the Board of Elections section on www.wakegov.com.

One option is Herbert C. Young Community Center on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. ; Friday, Oct. 3 from noon until 8 p.m. ; or Saturday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Absentee ballots are also available by mail. Call the Board of Elections at (919) 856-6240.

A second-place finisher can call for a runoff Nov. 4 if no one gets a majority of votes in a race.

For more information, see Elections under Site Index on our Web site, townofcary.org.

More Marvelous Music

Join us as Livingston Taylor kicks off the 2003-2004 Marvelous Music Series at Herbert C. Young Community Center .

A winner of the Boston Music Award for the “best folk and acoustic artist”, Taylor plays guitar, piano and banjo.

Marvelous Music Series’ fifth season includes The Butch Thompson Trio from public radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion”; the Nuclear Whales Saxophone Orchestra; and the grand finale – the Sauce Boss.

Buy premier seating tickets for three separate concerts and get 20 percent off the regular ticket price for the fourth concert. Get individual tickets at Town community and arts centers. Call (919) 469-4061 for more information.

Taylor, who grew up in Chapel Hill, is artist in residence at Harvard University and a professor at Berklee College of Music.

"Wood and Steel" magazine calls him an unrepentant romantic with a biting sense of humor.

More Space to Park

Work is wrapping up on the new, 486-space parking deck on Town Hall campus. By the time most of you receive this issue of BUD, the parking deck should be open.

It’s the first major piece in the expansion and renovation on Town Hall campus. This will increase convenience for citizens by enabling us to bring back many employees who are scattered in leased office space.

A third office building, Building C, is scheduled to open by spring 2004. It will house the Police and Technology Services departments.

Read more about the Town Hall campus renovation and expansion project in the Current Projects section of townofcary.org.

Shifting Park into Gear

Construction is getting under way on Sears Farm Road Park. It should be ready by late next spring or early summer.

Cary’s 21st park will be 13 1/2 acres, off Green Hope School Road west of N.C. 55.

Sears Farm Road Park will be more than the typical neighborhood park. It will feature walkways, gardens, a play lawn, picnic shelter, rest rooms and basketball slab.  The cost of the park is $1.4 million. We involved townspeople in the design process for the park.

Bud Bits

Bridge replacement will require closing of Queensferry Road between Bruce and Annandale drives for about three months beginning Sept. 2. Detour signs will be posted.

Enjoy rich, pure sounds of brass during the second Brass at Bond concert afternoon on Sunday, Sept. 21 from 2 - 6 p.m. It features four of North Carolina’s most innovative brass ensembles. Bring your blanket and picnic. The concert is free.

Sign up for the electronic mailing list service for e-mails on news, planning issues and much more. It’s free. See “E-mail Service” under Shortcuts on the home page of the Web site.

Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park is the perfect setting for music and theatre. There’s something for everyone during the Sertoma Series. Call (919) 469-4061 for more details.

Fence Postings

Letters explaining new fence rules are going out this month to property owners along thoroughfares and collector streets.

The letters explain standards that apply to fences erected after 1995. Purposes include reducing obstructions to motorists’ visibility and providing attractive breaks along fence fronts.

We’re confident that nearly everyone who knows the rules will work hard to follow them.

Fences within 30 feet of thoroughfares such as Cary Parkway or collector are supposed to be 5 feet from the right-of-way. Fences that are 3 1/2 feet or taller require an average of one evergreen shrub for every 5 feet of fence.

Those with fences that don’t comply should contact the Town about what to do. For more about fence rules, see Site Index on townofcary.org. If you have further questions, please contact Greg Barnes, zoning compliance officer, at (919) 460-4984.

New Look for Web Site

We’ve redesigned the home page of our Web site to update the look, load faster and send you directly to more of the programs and services you want.

The home page now includes an “I Want To” drop-down menu for some of our most requested information. Colorful icons link to year-round offerings such as Cary TV, cable channel 11, and to seasonal favorites such as the Amphitheatre at Regency Park.  The new Headlines feature will also help you keep up with what’s happening in Town government.

We’ve retained the topical approach so that you can still find information without needing to know which department provides the program or service. Use the feedback button to let us know what you think.

Workshops

Come to a free composting workshop in Bond Park.  Pre-registration is required, so call (919) 469-4090.

§  Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9 - 10 a.m. with Jean Tracy, master composter

§  Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9 - 10 a.m. with Karen Hales

After the workshop on Sept. 27, buy your own Earth Machine Compost Bin for only $30, cash or check only please. Sale ends at 1 p.m. or when supplies run out.

Fire Safety

Use portable extinguishers for a small fire such as one in a wastebasket that is not growing or filling the room with smoke. Make sure everyone else has left the building and that someone is calling the Fire Department.

Keep extinguishers close to an exit.  In a fire, pull the pin and aim low at the base of the fire. Squeeze the lever slowly and sweep from side to side.

Call (919) 469-4056 for more fire safety information.

Conservation Corner

Recycling Tip: Do the Recycling Stomp.  Remember, before you place your plastic bottles, aluminum cans, drink boxes, and juice containers in your recycling bin, stomp on them! This not only saves room in your recycling bin for more recyclables, but it also saves money. If we all remember to flatten our recyclable containers by doing the recycling stomp, we can save about $15,000 a year in Town disposal costs. That’s good news for all of us.

Water Conservation Tip: Reseeding or over-seeding your fescue lawn this fall? For tips on how to reseed your lawn within the guidelines of the Alternate Day Watering schedule, please call the Public Works and Utilities Department at (919) 469-4090.
