Safe and spooky Halloween

Are you looking for a fun, safe way to celebrate Halloween? We invite you to check out one of our special-themed programs.

Our annual Safe-N-Sane celebration, held at Cary Towne Center Mall from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, offers a fun place for kids to trick-or-treat, plus costume contests, not-so scary stories, and more.

Other Halloween activities include the Town of Cary’s annual Haunted House, which will be open on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 5-9 p.m. at Old Cary Elementary and a “tricks only” Halloween Skate Contest from noon-8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 at Sk8-Cary.

For more information, look up Halloween Events at www.townofcary.org or call 469-4061.

Recycle sale at Hemlock Bluffs

Each year, generous citizens donate their unwanted household items like toys, small appliances and furniture to be recycled at the Friends of Hemlock Bluffs annual recycle sale.

The much-anticipated annual yard sale-style fundraiser returns this year on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It’s your donations that make the difference. Please bring your unwanted treasures to the Stevens Nature Center on Thursday, Oct. 25 or Friday, Oct. 26 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Then come back the day of the sale for some treasure hunting!

Proceeds from the sale support environmental education efforts and events at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve. For more information, call 387-5980.

Place loose leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. on the first day of collection for your area.  The map and schedule is also available online at www.townofcary.org.

Honoring our veterans

Please join us as we honor all veterans at our annual luncheon on Nov. 9 at 11:30 a.m. in the Cary Senior Center ballroom.

Artists say we’re number 1

Our Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival remains the top-rated, one-day festival in the country in the Classic and Contemporary Crafts category. This year, we’ve also been named one of the Top 15 Best National Festivals, building on our previous ranking in the Top 25 by the country’s premier art show and festival authority, Sunshine Artist magazine.

Holiday trash collection changes

Town offices will close on Monday, Nov. 12 for Veteran’s Day and on Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23 in observance of Thanksgiving.

Trash collection will not change during the week of Veteran’s Day.

During the week of Thanksgiving, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday customers will have their trash collected one day earlier. Friday’s collection will remain unchanged.

Practice your plan

Each year in October, fire departments across the country focus on educating citizens about fire safety during National Fire Prevention Week. The theme this year is “Practice Your Escape Plan.”

According to a National Fire Protection Association poll, one out of four Americans has an escape plan in case of fire. Unfortunately, most say they have not practiced it.

A fire in your home may allow only seconds to escape. It’s important that you have a plan that you’ve practiced, and everyone in your home knows exactly what to do.

To get started, sit down with your family and draw a floor plan of your home. Make sure your escape plan shows:

   - Two ways out of every room. Your first way out would be the door and your second way out may be a window.     - At least one smoke alarm on each floor of your home. Make sure you can hear the smoke alarm if your bedroom door is closed.

   - A family meeting place outside the home where everyone will go after escaping. How about a tree or a neighbor's home? Once everyone's out, call the fire department from an outside phone. Never go back inside a burning building.

Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year. To start the fire drill, push the "test" button on one of your smoke alarms.

Cary Town Band celebrates 20th anniversary

This year, the Cary Town Band is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Join the band as it takes you through the years of its music during a special anniversary concert on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cary Senior Center. This performance is free and open to the public.

The Cary Town Band will also perform on Saturday, Nov. 10 as the opening act for Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band at the Herb Young Community Center at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this show are available through Ticketmaster or at the Herb Young Community Center box office. You will also be able to enjoy the band on  Dec. 1 during our tree lighting ceremony at Town Hall.

A special antique drum display will be exhibited at Town Hall from Oct. 9 through Nov. 9 to honor the history of the band.

On October 8, 1987, Mayor Harold Ritter proposed helping fund a Cary Town Band to the Town Council. The band had been suggested to him by Dr. James R. Hammerle, who continues to direct the band today.

For more about the Cary Town Band, visit them on the Web at www.angelfire.com/nc/CaryTownBand/welcome.html. For information about these performances, call 469-4061.

Winterize your system

If you have an automatic irrigation system, consider winterizing it for the colder months when it’s not in use.

First drain water from your system to prevent cracking lines and heads. Then remove or insulate the backflow prevention device and other exposed pipes.

For more, visit Water Conservation at www.townofcary,org.

Youth hoops

Registration for Winter Youth Basketball, ages 10-18, will begin Oct. 8 and run through Oct. 28. The fee is $44 for Cary residents and $69 for non-residents.

Registration forms will be mailed to last year’s participants. To request a registration form call 469-4062.
