Know in a wink: Cary TV 11 provides real-time traffic information

If you are one of the many motorists driving in or through Cary during rush hour, you may find it a little easier to plan your trip.

Before you drive, wink and view live images from Cary ’s traffic cameras on our government access channel, Cary TV 11, from 6-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. , Monday through Friday.

wink is our way of addressing your traffic concerns, and it’s the name to remember for Cary traveler information.

Part of Cary’s Advanced Traffic Management System, wink TV allows you to plan ahead and choose the best route by providing views from 21 traffic cameras located at key intersections throughout Cary, with images from two more cameras added later this fall. wink is also connected to the NC Department of Transportation’s traffic center.

In the coming months, we will launch wink Web, an interactive Web site that will provide reliable, real-time traffic information 24 hours a day, including camera images, travel alerts and traffic flow conditions on the routes you select. While you’re on the road, dynamic message signs allow us to provide you with on the spot alerts and information about detours and delays.

Visit the Traffic Signals section of our Web site at www.townofcary.org to learn more about wink and our efforts to monitor traffic and keep you informed.

Citizens First: Cary States its Mission

Each day, Town of Cary staff comes to work with one goal in mind: to serve our citizens.

Providing our citizens with the best quality of life has always been at the heart of what we do, and it’s also at the heart of our newly revamped mission statement.

A diverse group of Town employees from every department recently worked to revise our Mission Statement and Statement of Values. Led by Town Manager Bill Coleman, the group updated the documents drawn up in 1988 to make them more clear, concise, relevant and memorable.

Our Mission Statement and Statement of Values serve as the foundation for how we serve our community. We hope you’ll find our values reflected in everything we do: providing customer service that is always polite, friendly and responsive and treating everyone with dignity, respect and fairness.

You can read these documents at www.townofcary.org.

A Small Change with Big Rewards

Want to cut your risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half? Make sure your home has a working smoke alarm.

A good practice to follow is to change the batteries in your smoke alarms when you change your clock back to Standard Time. This simple act will make sure your smoke alarm is working when you need it, providing you and your family with the extra seconds necessary to escape from a fire.

Did you know the majority of home fires occur between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. when most people are asleep? Many mistakenly believe that the smoke from the fire will wake them.

Don’t count on it. Smoke can dull your senses, cause loss of consciousness and even death.

Smoke alarms are designed to wake you in the event of a fire, but they can only protect you if they are working. For more on fire prevention, call (919) 469-4056 or visit www.townofcary.org.

Hang an Ornament on Cary ’s Community Tree

Join us as we create the first-ever Town of Cary Community Tree . Located in the newly completed Town Hall, this tree will feature ornaments created by members of our community.

We’re inviting schools, businesses, churches, non-profit organizations and clubs to create an ornament that reflects the purpose of their organization.

All the ornaments will be hung on the tree during the official Tree Lighting ceremony on Dec. 2.

For more information, call (919) 469-4061.

Winterize Your System

If you have an automatic irrigation system, now is the time to winterize it.

First drain water from your system to prevent frozen water from cracking the lines and heads. Then either remove or insulate the backflow preventer and other exposed pipes.

Find out more in the Water Conservation section at www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4090.
