Heart of the Holidays

Kick off the season with a day full of holiday cheer on December 1 in the heart of Cary!

At 10 a.m., head to the streets of downtown Cary for the Heart of Cary Association’s Old Time Winter Festival. Enjoy arts and crafts, entertainment, food, activities, and more. It’s a good time to start (or finish) your holiday shopping!

Next, head over to the Page-Walker Arts & History Center for the annual open house starting at 4 p.m. There will be refreshments, music by the Moment's Notice Jazz Quartet, and activities to celebrate the season.

The official tree lighting for the Town of Cary will be held at 6 p.m. on Town Hall Campus by the Town Tree. It’s a wonderful time to bring your blanket and your loved ones and welcome in the holiday season with your neighbors. This festive night features actors, singers, dancers, and musicians from our community onstage.

Inside Town Hall, we’ll unveil the “community tree.” Many groups that serve our local community will be providing handcrafted ornaments to be displayed on the tree.

For more information, call 469-4061 or get more Heart of the Holidays details at www.townofcary.org.

Council welcomes new members

Cary will welcome several new faces to the Town Council on Dec. 13. Harold Weinbrecht will take office as mayor, while Don Frantz and Gale Adcock join the council as District B and District D representatives, respectively.

Erv Portman, who was appointed to the Council in February to fill a vacancy, was elected to remain in the At-Large seat.

Weinbrecht, Adcock, Frantz and Portman will join At-Large representative Julie Robison, District A representative Jennifer Robinson and District C representative Jack Smith on the Town Council.

The council meets the second and fourth Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

Early voting sets record

Early voting at our one-stop voting location, Herb Young Community Center, was a popular choice for Cary voters this year—one that set a new record for our local elections. This year, 1,721 votes were cast, compared to 573 in October 2003 and 435 in October 2005.

Tinsel Town opens at Booth

Tinsel Town is a magical winter wonderland located in Koka Booth Amphitheatre at Regency Park. It features a real outdoor skating rink, weekend visits with Santa, beautifully decorated holiday trees, hot cocoa, holiday treats and more!

Visit Tinsel Town from November 23 through December 31. (We’re closed on December 25).  The rink will be open Monday through Friday from 4-9 p.m., Saturdays from 2-10 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.

Bring cans to Santa land

On December 1, bring your kids to Santa’s Workshop, the Cary Teen Council’s annual Christmas celebration.

Held at the Herb Young Community Center from 10 a.m. to noon, there will be holiday craft projects, light refreshments, live entertainment by Cary Ballet Conservatory and a special visitor from the North Pole!

While you’re there, support the Teen Council’s food drive by bringing two non-perishable food items or make a cash donation. All contributions will be given to a local charity. For more information, call 460-4965.

Bud Bits

Planning to clean up your Christmas decorations before the New Year? Take Christmas trees to one of our convenient drop-off centers beginning Dec. 17 through Jan. 15, 2008: Citizen’s Convenience Center, Oak Grove Elementary School, and Green Hope Elementary School.

Have you ever noticed someone littering and wondered whom you should call? NC Department of Transportation makes it easy to report litterbugs. Call (877) 368-4968 or go online to www.ncdot.org and fill out a Swat-a-Litterbug report form. To make a report, you need the license plate number of the car, date of the violation, place of the incident and a description of the litter.

Hand watering for drought relief

Beginning Nov. 1 and continuing through at least Dec. 31, water customers in Cary and Morrisville - including businesses - will no longer be able to water outdoors using automated water devices such as sprinklers and irrigation systems.

We’re asking you to cut back even more than our normal year-round alternate day watering restrictions in light of Governor Easley’s call for increased conservation during the statewide drought.

Hand-watering is still allowed any day of the week. Outdoor washing is also okay.

The Nov. 1 ban on automated outdoor watering will not apply to reclaimed water system customers or customers who irrigate with wells. It also won’t impact the Town’s ability to maintain safe surfaces at our fields.

The new water rules come with new penalties. Customers will be given one warning for violating the new rules; those who violate the rules a second time face a fine of $500 and $1,000 for each additional violation. We may discontinue water service if the rules are violated six times.

The new restrictions will be in place until the region experiences meaningful relief from the drought. To keep up with the Town’s latest water conservation efforts, visit www.townofcary.org.

Plastics recycling program expands

Beginning November 1, the Cary Recycles program will expand its plastics recycling to include plastics labeled #1-7 for recycling in both bottle and tub shape.

Some examples include Cool Whip tubs, butter/margarine tubs, yogurt cups, and oversized laundry detergent containers.

These items can be placed in your curbside recycling bin for collection or taken to the Citizen’s Convenience Center for drop-off recycling.

Please do not include lids, take-out containers (“clam shell”), frozen entrée trays, and plastic bags.  For more information, call 469-4090 or visit Recycling at www.townofcary.org.

Holiday trash collection reminder

In observance of the holiday season, Town offices will close on Monday, Dec. 24, Tuesday, Dec. 25 and Wednesday, Dec. 26.

During the week beginning Dec. 24, trash collection schedules will change for Tuesday customers only.  Those customers will be picked up on Monday, Dec. 24.

Also, during the week of Dec. 24, yard waste will not be collected. Instead, Town crews will provide collection of excess garbage.

     For more information, visit www.townofcary.org.

Safety shutdown

Do you know where your water master shut-off valve is located?  If a pipe bursts anywhere in the house - kitchen, bath, basement or crawl space - this valve turns it off.

The master shut-off may be near the water heater, the washing machine or even in your front hall closet. It's where the water line comes into your house from the street. Be sure everyone in the family knows where it is and what it does.  For more, visit www.townofcary.org.

Give to Oasis

Oasis is a charitable giving program that allows neighbors to help neighbors. By making a donation, you can help utility customers who are facing financial hardship pay their bill or fix plumbing leaks. Donations are tax deductible. Want to help? Find out more about Oasis at www.townofcary.org.
